It assumes the perspective of statistical physics, which provides the theoretical frame for dealing with complex systems in general. Though their role in the history of Scottsdale's development has been marginalized over the years, Mexicano residents made many important contributions to the city's establishment and growth. In the early 1900s, businessman E. O. Brown recruited Mexicanos from Arizona border towns to work in the area's cotton fields and on the farms. These laborers were the first people to live in the neighborhood that now makes up the center of Old Scottsdale. Some called it the "barrio," but Scottsdale Mexicanos called the area "home." Today only a few buildings remain that can attest to the neighborhood's original inhabitants, most notably the Old Adobe Mission and Coronado School, now the home of the Scottsdale Historical Museum. The preservation of these buildings and the more than 200 photographs included in this book are just a few of the testaments to Scottsdale's fascinating Mexican heritage.
This book presents a selection of the talks resulting from research carried out by different groups at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica and presented at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, held in Valencia in 2019. The various chapters describe a wide variety of topics: cancer modelling, carbon capture by adsorption, nanoscale diffusion and complex systems to predict earthquakes. These mathematical studies were specifically aided via collaborations with biomedical engineers, physicists and chemists.
