The volume contributes to a better understanding of Iranian history since 1953, with a focus on societal change and its reflection in intellectual discourse. The papers explore the attitudes of Iranians toward modernity and tradition before and after the Revolution of 1979. With insights from Oriental studies, history, sociology, literature and social anthropology, the volume offers a cross-disciplinary perspective on the intellectual, political, and social history of Iran.
This open access book addresses, for the first time, Islamic social work as an emerging concept at the interface of Islamic thought and social sciences. Applying a multidisciplinary approach it explores, on the one hand, the discourse that provides religious legitimisation to social work activities and, on the other hand, case studies of practical fields of Islamic social work including educational programmes, family counselling, and resettlement of prisoners. Globalization is usually seen as a uniform force producing similar social consequences across all societies affected. The contributions in this volume challenge this notion by demonstrating that reactions to the same global changes vary across different parts of the world. In particular, this volume examines the crucial role of economically and politically integrated regions as mediators between global challenges and local responses. To the extent that different regional reactions to global change retroact on their global context, global social transformation becomes a highly complex phenomenon.
This volume brings together current research on young people, (non)religion, and diversity, documenting the forms young people’s stances may take and the social or spatial contexts in which these may be formed. The social contexts studied include the family, school, and faith communities. This volume draws on a trove of unpublished original material from the pre-1940s to the present to offer a unique historiographic study of twentieth-century Methodist missionary work and women’s active expression of faith, practised at the critical confluence of historical and global changes. Verschiedene Islamwissenschaftler gehen in ihren Beiträgen der Frage nach, wie 'der Islam' oder 'Islamisches' im literarischen Schaffen arabischer, türkischer und persischer Autoren sichtbar wird. In literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersuchen sie den Einfluss der Religion auf die Gestaltung des täglichen Lebens in den fiktionalen Lebensgeschichten. To date, there has been no comprehensive and coherent approach to determining the communicative and precommunicative processes involved in the construction of group identities. The present study fills this gap by developing a unified theoretical foundation that can be used to capture empirical construction processes. Moreover, it contributes to the domain of group communication research. It creates a basic theoretical riverbed that provides a conceptual foundation for the conception of inter- and intra-group communication, which does not take its starting point from 'objective' categories, but from de facto socialization processes. In addition, the architecture of an innovative social theory is presented using the example of the construction of group identity, which satisfies the demands of epistemological interests in communication studies and possibly also in other disciplines.
