The Use of New Media by the Palestinian Diaspora in the United Kingdom

This book presents pioneering research on the impact of new media on the Palestinian Diaspora, and is the result of unprecedented access to the Palestinian community in the United Kingdom. As the book shows, new technology empowers the Palestinian people, enables their global visibility, and strengthens democratic values in this society. It deals with the impact of...

A Handbook of Islam

A Handbook of Islam is an abridged edition of the work The Religion of Islam, a renowned research work first published in 1936, with subsequent editions published till the present time. The Religion of Islam is a comprehensive book which divides its extensive treatment of Islam into three parts: (1) the sources of Islam, (2) the principles or doctrines of Islam, and (3) the practices of Islam relating to both the spiritual and the material aspects of human life. In this abridgment, discussions on the more advanced topics in The Religion of Islam have been omitted as being of interest only to scholars and researchers, and certain matters of detail have been condensed. The formatting design has been amended, using indented quotations and notes at ends of chapters, to make the book easier to read for the ordinary reader.

Giving to God

Giving to God examines the everyday practices of Islamic giving in post-revolutionary Egypt. From foods prepared in Sufi soup kitchens, to meals distributed by pious volunteers in slums, to almsgiving, these acts are ultimately about giving to God by giving to the poor. Surprisingly, many who practice such giving say that they do not care about the poor, instead framing their actions within a unique non-compassionate ethics of giving. At first, this form of giving may appear deeply selfish, but further consideration reveals that it avoids many of the problems associated with the idea of “charity.” Using the Egyptian uprising in 2011 and its call for social justice as a backdrop, this beautifully crafted ethnography suggests that “giving a man a fish” might ultimately be more revolutionary than “teaching a man to fish.”
