Humans have utilized the bioactive principles of different plants for various beneficial physiological properties including antimicrobial properties for many centuries. However, interests of using medicinal plants declined in the 20th century with the availability of effective synthetic antimicrobial drugs. The development of microbial resistance to various drugs has accelerated research interests towards the use of phytochemicals as alternatives to synthetic drugs in the recent years. This book presents an comprehensive reviews on the antimicrobial and antiviral properties of numerous recently reported phytochemicals, and their mechanisms of antimicrobial actions. Some of the chapters have ...
Due to the wide acceptance of poultry meat and eggs, poultry farming is the fastest growing global livestock industry. Nutrition plays a vital role in economic production and the maintenance of proper poultry health. Therefore, there is a great need to update balanced nutrient requirements for new breeds, utilize alternative feed resources, evaluate newer feed additives to optimize production while excluding antimicrobial feed additives and maintain overall health. The first section of this book contains six chapters that discuss the utilization of unconventional feeds, nanominerals to reduce mineral proportions in diets, and water intake affected by environmental temperature. The second section contains six chapters that describe proper nutritional management to improve gut health and immunity, the prevention of common diseases, and the amelioration of heat stress in poultry.
The aim of this book is to disseminate the most recent research in science and technology against microbial pathogens presented at the first edition of the ICAR Conference Series (ICAR2010) held in Valladolid, Spain, in November 2010.This volume is a compilation of 86 chapters written by active researchers that offer information and experiences and afford critical insights into anti-microbe strategies in a general context marked by the threat posed by the increasing antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic microorganisms. “Anti” is here taken in a wide sense as “against cell cycle, adhesion, or communication”, and when harmful for the human health (infectious diseases, chemotherapy etc...
Feed additives (natural or synthetic) are formulations added to livestock rations to improve growth rates, reproductive and productive traits, feed efficiency, ruminal fermentation profiles, methane mitigation, digestion and absorption of nutrients, immunity, and overall health of the animal. Organic Feed Additives for Livestock will focus on the beneficial effects of organic feed additives and on food animals, including ruminants, poultry, fish, and more. It will also explore how these feed additives can benefit food animal production, reproduction, and health. Each chapter will cover the significance of an organic feed supplement, especially as an alternative to synthetic growth promoters,...
Antimicrobial susceptibility profile and effect of stem bark extracts of Curtisia dentata on multi-drug resistant verotoxic Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter spp. isolates obtained from water and wastewater samples / Hamuel James Doughari [und weitere]. Antimicrobial utilization in intensive care units of a private tertiary care hospital / Pramil Tiwari, Vani Yadav and Shilpi Singh. Bacterial clearance from blood in mice infected by S. pneumoniae (penicillin MIC = 16 ug/ml) presenting specific IgG (non-protective levels) and treated with sub-therapeutic regimens of cefditoren (a highly bound cephalosporin) / Fabio Cafini [und weitere]. Characterisation of methicillin resistant Staphylococcu...
Animal food production faces many challenges including shortage of high-quality feed ingredients, contribution of greenhouse gases and pollutants to the environment, development of antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and animal health and welfare. This examines these issues over three sections. The first section is the introduction. The second section provides insights into optimization of pasture utilization employing different supplements and feed additives to maximize beef cattle production, use of insect meal as a promising protein feed ingredient, and ruminal microbiome manipulation to improve ruminal fermentation efficiency. The third section discusses accurate estimation of enteric methane emission factors, reduction of enteric methane emissions by means of feeding management and antimethanogenic compounds, and different heavy metal pollution by poultry wastes and associated health hazards.
The aim of the methodology developed in these guidelines is to introduce a harmonized international approach assessing nutrient flows and impact assessment for eutrophication and acidification for livestock supply chains taking the specificity of the various production systems involved into consideration. The methodology strives to increase understanding of nutrient use efficiency and associated environmental impacts and to facilitate the improvement of livestock systems’ environmental performance. The guidelines are a product of the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership, a multi-stakeholder initiative whose goal is to improve the environmental sustainabilit...
