This new collection of papers from leading experts provides an overview of cutting-edge research in Old World zooarchaeology. The research presented here spans various areas across Europe, Western Asia and North Africa – from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Several chapters focus on Iberia, but the eastern Mediterranean and Britain are also featured. Thematically, the book covers many of the research areas where zooarchaeology can provide a significant contribution. These include animal domestication, bone modifications, fishing, fowling, economic and social status, as well as adaptation and improvement. The investigation of these topics is carried out using a diversity of approaches, t...

Cattle and People

This volume originates in a conference session that took place at the 2018 International Council of Archaeozoology conference in Ankara, Turkey, entitled "Humans and Cattle: Interdisciplinary Perspectives to an Ancient Relationship." The aim of the session was to bring together zooarchaeologists and their colleagues from various other research fields working on human cattle interactions over time. The contributions in this volume reflect well the breadth of work being undertaken on the ancient relationship between humans and cattle across the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia, and from the late Pleistocene to postmedieval period. Almost all involve the study of archaeological cattle remains and use different zooarchaeological methods, but the combination of these approaches with that of ethnography, isotopes and genetics is also featured. A View from the Herd

In this book, the late Richard Redding synthesizes his decades-long work on the ancient agricultural economy of Egypt. Drawing on a diverse range of data, including zooarchaeology, ancient texts, and iconographic sources, he explores the role of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs in the economic infrastructure of ancient, mainly Pharaonic, Egypt and the complexities of decision-making processes that shaped the use and management of these vital livestock resources. The book integrates zooarchaeological and historical data with information on unimproved breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs from Egypt and the broader Middle East as well as considers texts and tomb paintings. Redding argues that...

Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Tandem Mass Spectrometry - Molecular Characterization presents a comprehensive coverage of theory, instrumentation and description of experimental strategies and MS/MS data interpretation for the structural characterization of relevant molecular compounds. The areas covered include the analysis of drugs, metabolites, carbohydrates and protein post-translational modifications. The book series in Tandem Mass Spectrometry serves multiple groups of audiences; professional (academic and industry), graduate students and general readers interested in the use of modern mass spectrometry in solving critical questions of chemical and biological sciences.

Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, 15th International Conference (PACBB 2021)

This book features novel research papers spanning many different subfields in bioinformatics and computational biology, presenting the latest research on the practical applications to promote fruitful interactions between young researchers in different areas related to the field. Clearly, biology is increasingly becoming a science of information, requiring tools from the computational sciences. To address these challenges, we have seen the emergence of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. PACBB'21 expects to contribute to this effort by encouraging a successful collaboration of researchers in different areas related to bioinformatics. The PACBB'21 technical program included 17 papers covering many different subfields in bioinformatics and computational biology. Therefore, this conference, held in Salamanca (Spain), definitely promotes the collaboration of scientists from different research groups and with different backgrounds (computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists) to reach breakthrough solutions for these challenges.

Proteomics may be defined as the large-scale study of the proteome, i.e. a set of proteins being expressed in a certain fluid, tissue, organ or organism. Although still of limited and restricted use in most areas of farm animal and veterinary research, proteomics potential is unequivocal holding a significant promise in applications such as vaccine and drug development, animal product quality, physiology or toxicology. Nevertheless, proteomics use has been growing steadily during the last 2-3 years and, as time goes by; proteomics-based studies are more and more common, not just to scientists but to the general public, unraveling their full potential. This book reflects the will of a group o...

Farm animal proteomics

Proteomics is a field with growing interest in almost every area of life sciences. Proteomic techniques, along with potential and obtained results have long been key components of biomedical and pharmaceutical research. In agriculture, animal and veterinary research however, use of proteomics is still limited, despite the large number of potential applications. As a result, there is a pressing need for wider use and dissemination of proteomics in animal and veterinary science research. This book meets this need by bridging the gap between experts in the technology of proteomics and those at the forefront of research into many facets of animal physiology and pathophysiology. The book encompas...

This volume provides the most up-to-date and holistic but compact account of the peopling of the world from the perspective of language, genes and material culture, presenting a view from the Himalayas. The phylogeny of language families, the chronology of branching of linguistic family trees and the historical and modern geographical distribution of language communities inform us about the spread of languages and linguistic phyla. The global distribution and the chronology of spread of Y chromosomal haplogroups appears closely correlated with the spread of language families. New findings on ancient DNA have greatly enhanced our understanding of the prehistory and provenance of our biological ancestors. The archaeological study of past material cultures provides yet a third independent window onto the complex prehistory of our species.
