In Hard Luck and Heavy Rain Joseph C. Russo takes readers into the everyday lives of the rural residents of Southeast Texas. He encounters the region as a kind of world enveloped in on itself, existing under a pall of poverty, illness, and oil refinery smoke. His informants’ stories cover a wide swath of experiences, from histories of LGBTQ+ life and the local petrochemical industries to religiosity among health food store employees and the suffering of cancer patients living in the Refinery Belt. Russo frames their hard-luck stories as forms of verbal art and poetic narrative that render the region a mythopoetic landscape that epitomizes the impasse of American late capitalism. He shows that in this severe world, questions of politics and history are not cut and dry, and its denizens are not simply backward victims of circumstances. Russo demonstrates that by challenging classist stereotypes of rural Americans as passive, ignorant, and uneducated, his interlocutors offer significant insight into the contemporary United States.
The first part of this book describes the background and the current state of the art through a summary about: obesity and sedentary lifestyles as one of today’s main public health problems; the relationship between PA, obesity and academic and cognitive performance; and the most recent findings on PA in the classroom, as a tool to improve health and cognitive performance in early childhood. The first part also details the aims and methodology used in the MOVI-da 10! study. The second part specifies the characteristics of the MOVI-da 10! programme, and provides copiable session plans of the 100 activities used in the programme, which can be of use for any professional interested in implementing PA interventions based on active breaks in the classroom.

Numerous studies have shown the positive effects of physical activity (PA) on schoolchildren’s physical, psychological and social health. However, children’s levels of physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle have increased significantly in recent years, leading to a rise in childhood obesity and cardiovascular disease. The MOVI programmes to promote PA in school settings were launched with the aim of mitigating this public health problem. The Baroque was the first truly global culture. The Ibero-American Baroque illuminates its dissemination, dynamism, and transformation during the early modern period on both sides of the Atlantic. This collection of original essays focuses on the media, institutions, and technologies that were central to cultural exchanges in a broad early modern Iberian world, brought into being in the aftermath of the Spanish and Portuguese arrivals in the Americas. Focusing on the period from 1600 to 1825, these essays explore early modern Iberian architecture, painting, sculpture, music, sermons, reliquaries, processions, emblems, and dreams, shedding light on the Baroque as a historical moment of far-reaching and long-lasting importance.
