Current Advances in Exercise Immunology
Maintaining optimal immune function is at the cornerstone of disease prevention and management. The realization that lifestyle factors such as exercise, nutrition, sleep and stress can be targeted to optimize immune function for the prevention and treatment of illness and disease has intensified among physicians and health care providers. Exercise immunology as a discipline came to the fore in the early 1990’s through formation of the International Society of Exercise and Immunology (ISEI). Since then, several major advances have been made including the understanding that: (i) physical activity is associated with fewer incidences and symptoms of infection; (ii) every bout of exercise facilitates the ongoing exchange of immune cells between the blood and tissues to increase immune surveillance; (iii) regular exercise lowers chronic low-grade inflammation and improves vaccine responses in the elderly; (iv) contracting skeletal muscle acts as an immune regulatory organ; (v) physical activity can improve immune markers in aging and multiple disease states (e.g. cancer, HIV, diabetes); (vi) exercise expedites infection resolution and restricts host-pathogen entry and dissemination.
Frailty in the Elderly
The progressive growth in the number of older adults worldwide has led to a modification of the current healthcare scenario and a parallel increase in the use of public resources. In this book, we propose a conceptual framework within which aging, frailty, and care are analyzed through the lens of complexity medicine. Therefore, we present a multidimensional perspective that takes into account biomedical, (neuro)psychological, and socio-ecological vulnerability. The theses presented are the result of an inductive approach, based on many years of experience in the field, which has made it possible to identify strategies for frailty recognition and effective responses even in complicated clinical settings. The book is intended to be a tool of concrete and easy consultation, rich in reflections and suggestions.

Conversa Brasileira, http://coerll.utexas.edu/brazilpod/cob/, is a web-based Portuguese program developed at the University of Texas, which is designed to provide intermediate- and advanced-level students of Portuguese with an opportunity to analyze and study how Brazilians actually talk to one another in informal conversations. The online materials are comprised of 35 short video clips that are accompanied with optional Portuguese subtitles, English translations, pop-up commentary and analysis, PDF lesson notes, and user discussion blogs. The content of the videos provides learners with a slice-of-live view of Brazilian conversations in natural settings. This textbook provides learners with a hard copy of the lesson transcripts, translations, and lesson notes.
