The Acquisition of Spanish Morphosyntax

Contemporary Perspectives on the Acquisition of Spanish: Developing grammars
Volume 1 of this 2-volume set, Developing Grammars, examines how children and adults acquire Spanish syntax. The first section looks at the grammar of child Spanish in both monolingual and multilingual settings. The second section investigates the nature of L2 developing grammars, with attention to the roles of the first language and of universal principles.

This volume contains a selection of refereed and revised papers, originally presented at the 30th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages, representing the areas of syntax, semantics, their interfaces, and second language acquisition. The topics addressed include movement (both wh- and head-movement), control, issues of second language acquisition related to the Determiner Phrase, the effect of word order and syntactic simplification in second language acquisition, adverbials, syntactic constraints on access to lexical structure, a semantic characterization of the subjunctive in Spanish, and impersonal constructions and impersonal reflexive pronouns. Lifespan Acquisition and Language Change
This volume connects the latest research on language acquisition across the lifespan with the explanation of language change in specific sociohistorical settings. This conversation benefits from recent advances in two areas: on the one hand, the study of how learners of various ages and in various sociolinguistic contexts acquire language variation; on the other, historical sociolinguistics as the field that focuses on the study of historical patterns of language variation and change. Volume 2 of this 2-volume set, Production, Processing, and Comprehension, is devoted to the production, processing, and comprehension of Spanish by non-native speakers. The first section examines L2 production, looking at both oral and written language. The second section investigates issues related to L2 processing and comprehension of written and oral input.
Syntactic architecture and its consequences I
This volume collects novel contributions to comparative generative linguistics that “rethink” existing approaches to an extensive range of phenomena, domains, and architectural questions in linguistic theory. At the heart of the contributions is the tension between descriptive and explanatory adequacy which has long animated generative linguistics and which continues to grow thanks to the increasing amount and diversity of data available to us. The chapters address research questions on the relation of syntax to other aspects of grammar and linguistics more generally, including studies on language acquisition, variation and change, and syntactic interfaces. Many of these contributions show the influence of research by Ian Roberts and collaborators and give the reader a sense of the lively nature of current discussion of topics in synchronic and diachronic comparative syntax ranging from the core verbal domain to higher, propositional domains.
