Observations, Modeling and Systems Analysis in Geomagnetic Data Interpretation

Geomagnetic field penetrates through all shells of the solid Earth, hydrosphere and atmosphere, spreading into space. The Earth Magnetic Field plays a key-role in major natural processes. Geomagnetic field variations in time and space provide important information about the state of the solid Earth, as well as the solar-terrestrial relationships and space weather conditions. The monograph presents a set of fundamental and, at the same time, urgent scientific problems of modern geomagnetic studies, as well as describes the results of the authors’ developments. The new technique introduced in the book can be applied far beyond the limits of Earth sciences. Requirements to corresponding data ...

Plasma Research At The Limit: From The International Space Station To Applications On Earth (With Dvd-rom)

This book looks behind the scenes at the Plasma Crystal laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS) to see how science and research is carried out on the first physical science laboratory in space. As well as the background story of the ISS and the many scientific discoveries that were made, it focuses on the ups and downs on the route to success, and the people involved: the scientists, engineers, agency representatives, and, especially, the experimenters in space — the cosmonauts.Complex plasma research is the other focal point of the book, and this field of science is at the forefront of modern physics. The unexpected applications of the research ranging from plasma medicine and hygiene to agriculture are amongst the fastest growing and most promising areas of research and development. This book is written in such a way that it can be read by anyone curious about space, the ISS, research in space, cosmonauts, scientific endeavours and new discoveries. A DVD containing personal footage of the cosmonauts' work — their training, the experiment and at leisure on the space station — is included to enhance and supplement the text.

Dynamic Earth Environments

The U.S./Russian collaboration that used the Space Shuttle and the Mir Space Station as platforms for acquiring remote sensing information about the Earth between 1996 and 1998 produced significant scientific results on hydrology, land use, and changes in some of the Earth's most dynamic environments. Many of these outstanding images are presented here and compared with photographs taken during earlier missions, allowing detection of changes on the Earth's surface. Studies reported in this fascinating volume include observations of El Niño-related phenomena; fluctuating water levels of the Caspian and Aral Seas; smoke, dust, and aerosols in the atmosphere; urban land use changes; and drought in the southeastern United States and Mexico. This valuable information, and the techniques used to gather it, will form the basis for future remote sensing studies to be conducted from the International Space Station.

Space Flight

This book offers a comprehensive look at the history of space exploration, the technology that makes it possible, and the continued efforts that promise to carry us into the future. It goes through the history of space exploration, from the earliest sub-orbital and orbital missions to today's deep-space probes, to provide a close look at past and present projects, then turns its attention to programs being planned today and to the significance of future exploration. Both the novice and the advanced student of space exploration stand to profit from the author's engaging and insightful discussion.

Beyond the Saga of Rocket Science

In Space to Stay, the third book in the spell–binding The Saga of Rocket Science series, gives a thorough exposé of the U.S. Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. You will be there as Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perish and get incinerated inside their locked Apollo 1 capsule; when Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise didn’t know if they would make it back alive aboard a freezing lunar module on Apollo 13; as Neil and Buzz experienced the euphoria of being the first humans to land on the Moon, while Mike Collins in lunar orbit and an anxious world looked on. You’ll see the same panoramic vistas of the lunar landscape and the beautiful blue marble we call Earth as the astronauts saw. You are taken inside the Challenger Space Shuttle as it caught fire and disintegrated in flight. What seven brave astronauts felt like as they plunged to their deaths in a basically intact crew cockpit. You’ll understand exactly what failed and how it failed on both the Challenger and the ill–fated Columbia space shuttles, and why another seven astronauts aboard the Columbia felt no pain despite their grisly annihilation during reentry.
