Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery, DaWak 2011 held in Toulouse, France in August/September 2011. The 37 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 119 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on physical and conceptual data warehouse models, data warehousing design methodologies and tools, data warehouse performance and optimization, pattern mining, matrix-based mining techniques and stream, sensor and time-series mining.
Neuroimaging, Software, and Communication
This book analyses the social contexts in which programmers design neuroimaging software used in brain studies. It shows that in the same way people engage in everyday communication, programmers are involved in a series of communicative processes to realize the negotiations and discussions generated by software development. In this way, highly technical activities such as computer code writing are also underpinned by values, preferences, and power relations. At the same time, the book sheds new light on scientists’ increasing dependence on software. On the one hand, many scientific tasks can no longer be performed without the help of computational technologies. On the other hand, most scientists have only superficial computing knowledge. As a result, inequalities emerge whereby some scientists take the most strategic methodological decisions whereas other scientists can only rely on the technical help provided by user-friendly computer applications.
Working with Portuguese Corpora
Although Portuguese is one of the main world languages and researchers have been working on Portuguese electronic text collections for decades (e.g. Kelly, 1970; Biderman, 1978; Bacelar do Nascimento et al., 1984; see Berber Sardinha, 2005), this is the first volume in English that encapsulates the exciting and cutting-edge corpus linguistic work being done with Portuguese language corpora on different continents. The book includes chapters by leading corpus linguists dealing with Portuguese corpora across the world, and their contributions explore various methods and how they are applicable to a wide range of language issues. The book is divided into six sections, each covering a key issue in Corpus Linguistics: lexis and grammar, lexicography, language teaching and terminology, translation, corpus building and sharing, and parsing and annotation.
