The book provides an overview of the floods and major hydrological changes that occurred in the medieval Hungarian kingdom (covering the majority of the Carpathian Basin) between 1000 and 1500 AD. The analysis was based on contemporary documentary evidence presented for the first time and the results of archaeological and scientific investigations. Beyond the evidence on individual flood events, the book includes a comprehensive overview of short-, medium-, and long-term changes detected in a hydrologically sensitive environment during the transition period between the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. It also discusses the possible causes (including climate and human intervention) and the consequences for the physical and human environment, namely the related hydro-morphological changes, short- and long-term social response, and human perception issues.
An environmental history of natural disasters during the eighteenth-century decline of the Dutch Republic.
Eight short stories, often built on dialog, to tell about some aspects of life in today's world, its contradictions and, above all, the difficult search for new values. The tale "The Refusal", which gives the title to this short collection, was written in the aftermath of the fall of the Twin Towers: the episode is present in watermark, it could be any other situation of war and violence to which, unfortunately, we are too accustomed nowadays, but that people cannot accept, because the normality are not death, violence or massacre, that make people lose their reference points, as it is also stated in the tale "War". In an absurd world where the only parameter for the evaluation is the high e...
Zaniklé středověké vsi jsou fascinujícím historickým pramenem, někdy považovaným za klíčový doklad krize tehdejší evropské společnosti. Předkládaná monografie shrnuje hlavní poznávací přístupy zainteresovaných oborů, relevantní ekonomické teorie a také dosavadní interpretace pustnutí a zániku. Navrhuje zaniklé vsi vnímat jako indikátor adaptability a odolnosti předindustriálních rolnických komunit a s tímto prizmatem přistupuje k analýze vybraných regionů a lokalit na pomezí Čech a Německa. Studie má jedinečný a experimentální charakter, neboť kombinuje hlubokou analýzu písemných, kartografických i onomastických pramenů, výsledky tradičního povrchového průzkumu a analýzu reliktů identifikovaných na základě moderních metod dálkového průzkumu země.
Giacomo Rinaldi is a brilliant man, an Art lover that sees his life vanishing with the slow inflexibility of a river flowing in a distant landscape. He loses his wife Barbara, his former wife, his friends and the ones he loved the most and he finds himself opposite his life turning point before starting a slow fall into the hell of his restless soul. He might give up, leave his loved and sometimes distant God, let days pass in the same way, in an everlasting present made up of insignificant useless things without joy; or he might find the strength to struggle and the pleasure of living again, enjoy the sunset and the company and the comfort of that moon which is the protagonist of the novel ...
