Shaw describes her childhood in Bakersfield, California, her father's work with Harvey Dining Rooms and as a Christian Science Practitioner, early flight training in 1937-38 in a J-Cub. In 1943 Shaw was accepted into the WASP. Shaw describes her training and experiences while in training at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas. Shaw served at a number of bases throughout California and Nevada, including Chico Army Air Force Base and the flexible gunnery school at Las Vegas where she attended B-26 school. Her duties included transportation flights, engineering test hops, and the delivery of military documents. Shaw also attended Officers Candidate School. After the deactivation of the Wasp in December 1944, Shaw served in the Air Force Reserves until 1951 when she applied for active service and served as a squadron leader over the housekeeping unit. She was then transferred and served in England as the Finance Officer for three years. Shaw left the service in 1958 and worked as a U.S. Customs Inspector in Anchorage, Alaska until she retired to Washington State.
