AVENUE21. Connected and Automated Driving: Prospects for Urban Europe

This open access publication examines the impact of connected and automated vehicles on the European city and the conditions that can enable this technology to make a positive contribution to urban development. The authors argue for two theses that have thus far received little attention in scientific discourse: as connected and automated vehicles will not be ready for use in all parts of the city for a long time, previously assumed effects – from traffic safety to traffic performance as well as spatial effects – will need to be re-evaluated. To ensure this technology has a positive impact on the mobility of the future, transport and settlement policy regulations must be adapted and further developed. Established territorial, institutional and organizational boundaries must be investigated and challenged quickly. Despite – or, indeed, because of – the many uncertainties, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new design phase, not only in terms of technology development, but also regarding politics, urban planning, administration and civil society.

All Lorna has ever wanted is a husband and four children. And now she has just that - except they are someone else's husband and someone else's children. But Robert Danson and his kids are practically hers. She's beautiful, assured and looking for forgiveness. But is that all she wants? Lorna can't help but feel that this family isn't big enough for both of them . . .

Mark folded the tarp and carried it and the locked box into the potting shed. He laid the tarp on a shelf and sat on the overturned clay pot Fred had used as a stool. Rubbing his eyes he stared bleakly at the old metal file that held the seeds of something too awful to imagine. Nothing had prepared him for this. At the peak of a high-powered corporate career, Mark Grant enjoys position, prestige, and a loving family. His world is shaken when he abruptly loses the job that has been the focus of his life. He starts anew as the owner of a small but profitable landscape business and-just when he seems to have regained his balance-discovers that the company he owns is part of a vast network that threatens not only his livelihood, but the very lives of his family, friends, and countless other innocent victims. He begins to collect evidence of illegally dumped biohazardous waste to present to the Department of Environmental Health, but the risk of exposing the illicit activity intensifies when the criminals threaten his daughter's life. Will Mark be able to stop an environmental disaster and, at the same time, save his family and his business?
