“Money, money, and more money.” In the eyes of early modern warlords, these were the three essential prerequisites for waging war. The transnational studies presented here describe and explain how belligerent powers did indeed rely on thriving markets where military entrepreneurs provided mercenaries, weapons, money, credit, food, expertise, and other services. In a fresh and comprehensive examination of pre-national military entrepreneurship – its actors, structures and economic logic – this volume shows how readily business relationships for supplying armies in the 17th and 18th centuries crossed territorial and confessional boundaries. By outlining and explicating early modern military entrepreneurial fields of action, this new transnational perspective transcends the limits of national historical approaches to the business of war. Early Modern European Diplomacy
New Diplomatic History has turned into one of the most dynamic and innovative areas of research – especially with regard to early modern history. It has shown that diplomacy was not as homogenous as previously thought. On the contrary, it was shaped by a multitude of actors, practices and places. The handbook aims to characterise these different manifestations of diplomacy and to contextualise them within ongoing scientific debates. It brings together scholars from different disciplines and historiographical traditions. The handbook deliberately focuses on European diplomacy – although non-European areas are taken into account for future research – in order to limit the framework and ensure precise definitions of diplomacy and its manifestations. This must be the prerequisite for potential future global historical perspectives including both the non-European and the European world.

Factional Struggles
This title is available in Open Access thanks to the support of Université de Genève. Factional Struggles explores the dynamics of conflicts among ruling elites within cities, dynastic courts, rural areas and regional noble lineages during the early modern period. Building on case studies from France, Italy, the Empire and the Swiss Confederation, the essays collected by Mathieu Caesar in this volume highlight how factions were formed and how they shaped political society from the late Middle Ages. The authors have especially focused on how political and religious ideologies contributed to the formation of partisanship, the role of propaganda, and the significance and strategies of factional leaders. The volume shows how factions, despite the generally negative view of them held by theologians and jurists, were in practice accepted and used as political tools.
Jesuits and Matriarchs

Protegierte und Protektoren
Protektion ist ein Schlüsselbegriff der politisch-sozialen Sprache der europäischen Neuzeit. Der vorliegende Band rückt die sich wandelnden Semantiken und Praktiken des Schutzes vom 16. bis frühen 20. Jahrhundert erstmals systematisch in den Blick. Die Beiträge spannen einen weiten Bogen von Jean Bodins Definition von Protektion als ungleiche Allianz über das völkerrechtliche Institut des Protektorats bis hin zu den gegenwärtigen Debatten um eine responsibility to protect. Ausgewählte Fallbeispiele zeigen auf, dass politische Schutzverhältnisse nicht nur ein Macht- und Legitimationsinstrument der Großen waren. Sie stellten auch eine Option für mindermächtige Akteure dar, um ihre Unabhängigkeit zu wahren oder sich gegen Übergriffe des eigenen Herrschers zur Wehr zu setzen. Zugleich konnte die erlangte Sicherheit jedoch stets wieder in den Verlust der eigenen Selbständigkeit münden. Der Band leistet einen Beitrag zum vertieften historischen Verständnis einer Problematik, die nichts an Aktualität eingebüßt hat.
Lokale Interessen und große Strategie
Das Fürstentum Neuchâtel gelangte 1707 in den Besitz der Könige von Preußen. Die Herrschaft über das weit von Berlin entfernte Territorium wurde in einem engen Wechselspiel mit auswärtigen Mächten aufrechterhalten und zugleich eingeschränkt. Nebst dem Hof unterhielten auch lokale Ratsgremien und Korporationen Beziehungen zu fremden Obrigkeiten, teils als Delegierte des Souveräns, teils als außenpolitische Akteure eigenen Rechts. Angehörige der Neuenburger Elite partizipierten zudem als Gesandte oder Berater direkt an Verhandlungen der königlichen Diplomatie. Deren wachsendes Gewicht wussten sie entsprechend immer wieder für die Verfolgung ihrer grenzüberschreitenden ökonomischen und politischen Interessen zu nutzen. Im Gegenzug konnten die Könige von Preußen über den Besitz des kleinen Grenzterritoriums ihre politischen Beziehungen nach Frankreich und in die Eidgenossenschaft substantiell vertiefen und damit den Aktionsradius ihrer Machtpolitik auf dem europäischen Kontinent erweitern.
Heiligkeit aushandeln
Die Zuschreibung von Heiligkeit war in der frühen Neuzeit einem Aushandlungsprozess unterworfen, an dem ganz unterschiedliche Akteure beteiligt waren: Päpste, Priester und Gläubige, aber auch die Heiligen im Himmel selbst, die - so die Annahme - Wunder bewirkten oder auf andere Weise in den Kanonisationsprozess auf Erden eingriffen. Ausgehend von Gnadenorten in der katholischen Eidgenossenschaft, folgt diese Studie dem Landespatron Niklaus von Flüe und anderen, in der Eidgenossenschaft als "Vielselige" bezeichneten Figuren von ihrer Verehrung im lokalen Kontext bis zu den Verfahren der Kultanerkennung.
Beobachten, Vernetzen, Verhandeln / Observer, connecter, négocier
Für die Gesandten frühneuzeitlicher Fürsten war die Eidgenossenschaft ein äusserst schwieriges Terrain. Das komplexe Geflecht von Territorien unterschiedlicher Grösse, Verfassung und Konfession fügte sich nicht ein in politisch-soziale Ordnungsvorstellungen, die vom Ideal monarchischer Souveränität geprägt waren.
