Until the Eyes Shut

"The rulers' mistakes are paid for with the blood of the people. This is shown in history both recent and ancient, time and time again. It was no different of an Austrian mountain farmer's son who was thrown into the carnage of the Eastern Front. He was in the prime of his youth, and the German Reich was already close to losing the war. In ripe old age, he remembers those dark hours that have haunted him throughout his life. Manning his machine gun in merciless struggles with a superior enemy, or fighting for survival in brutal close combat, reduced to basest instincts. He also remembers the rock-solid comradeship with his mountain troop, the unexpected gestures of humanity, and an insane destructiveness at a time when the world was out of joint. This ruthless, honest, and touching real-life account of a simple frontline soldier serves as a reminder to standup for peace at all times, and to despise war. Until the eyes shut..."--Amazon.com

Host Nation Studies

Elementary and middle schools for children of most US military personnel provide an exceptional curricular component: A subject called Host Nation Studies is integrated in the daily schedule, teaching American children the culture and language of their current host country. The subject is unique for its early implementation as soon as 1946 when the fi rst US schools opened in Germany. And still today, native teachers provide cultural and intercultural opportunities to US elementary students all over the world. This dissertation focuses on the subject's conception and organization and the intercultural endeavours of US schools in Germany in two ways: First, historical research based on bibliographic resources regarding the school's history looks at the development of the program 1946 to 1970. A second perspective is given by a questionnaire survey, which asks Host Nation and American teachers about the current language and culture program within US schools in Germany --

A bold new spatial perspective on modern sculpture, with 800 color images of work by artists including Henry Moore, Lygia Clark, Anish Kapoor, and Ana Mendieta. This monumental, richly illustrated volume from ZKM | Karlsruhe approaches modern sculpture from a spatial perspective, interpreting it though contour, emptiness, and levitation rather than the conventional categories of unbroken volume, mass, and gravity. It examines works by dozens of twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists, including Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Lygia Clark, Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, Ana Mendieta, Fujiko Nakaya, Tomás Saraceno, and Alicja Kwade. The large-scale book contains o...

Hindenburg, Ludendorff and Hitler

They are two of twentieth-century history's most significant figures, yet today they are largely forgotten - Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff, Germany's First World War leaders. Although defeat in 1918 brought an end to their 'silent dictatorship', both generals played a key role in the turbulent politics of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Nazis.Alexander Clifford, in this perceptive reassessment of their political careers, questions the popular image of these generals in the English-speaking world as honorable 'Good Germans'. For they were intensely political men, whose ideas and actions shaped the new Germany and ultimately led to Hitler's dictatorship.Their poisonous warti...

Blood Red Snow

Günter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on, storing them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was not until he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author’s excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. Later, the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit – their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, some six decades later, the fulfilment of a responsibility the author feels to honour the memory of those who perished.
