The contents of this consolidated volume concern mercenaries from thedutchies or principalities of Brunswick, Ansbach and Bayreuth, andHessen-Hanau, based on sources in German archives. The Brunswick forces, itshould be noted, served mainly in Canada and northern New York, where theyare likely to be found residing in 1790--unless they became prisoners ofwar. The Ansbach and Bayreuth contingents were attached directly to theBritish army commanded by generals Howe and Clinton, and together served innearly every operation of the war. Their counterparts from Hessen-Hanaufought in New York, were captured during the Saratoga campaign, and wereforce-marched to Charlottesville, Virginia.

The ever growing library on the history of eugenics and fascism focuses largely on nation states, while this monograph asks why an ethnic minority, the Transylvanian Saxons, turned to eugenics as a means of self-empowerment in interwar Romania. The Eugenic Fortress investigates and unpacks the eugenic movement that emerged in the early twentieth century, and focuses on its conceptual and methodological evolution during the interwar period. Further on, the book analyzes the gradual process of politicisation and radicalisation at the hands of a second generation of Saxon eugenicists in conjunction with the rise of an equally indigenous fascist movement. The Saxon case study offers valuable insights into why an ethnic minority would seek to re-entrench itself behind the race-hygienic walls of a 'eugenic fortress', as well as the influence host and home nations had upon its design. Georgescu's work is ground breaking in the sense that the history of this uprooted community is usually handled with sensitivity and serious (and critical) research into Transylvanian Saxon involvement with Nazism has been energetically resisted.

What is the ultimate explanatory factor for the existence of the world, for all its changing phenomena and the enduring order found in it? In the history of Western thought, we can find a longstanding philosophical tendency to answer this question in terms of power: the universe is understood as an ordered whole produced by a rational power, that is, by the power of reason. That power is thought to be active in the sense of being capable of existing and acting in itself as an infinite, eternal, and unchangeable cause of the world.
