Conspicuously, Islam has become a key concern in most European societies with respect to issues of immigration, integration, identity, values and inland security. As the mere presence of Muslim minorities fails to explain these debates convincingly, new questions need to be asked: How did »Islam« become a topic? Who takes part in the debates? How do these debates influence both individual as well as collective »self-images« and »image of others«? Introducing Switzerland as an under-researched object of study to the academic discourse on Islam in Europe, this volume offers a fresh perspective on the objective by putting recent case studies from diverse national contexts into comparative perspective.
Prayer, Pop and Politics
What is it like to be young and religious in migration society? This volume presents research at the intersection of religion, age and race. The chapters' foci range from methodological challenges to conceptual work and empirical case studies. The authors present research on various religious traditions including contributions on young Alevis, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims, and apply an array of theoretical angles among them feminist, post- and de-colonial perspectives. Furthermore, the volume engages in the debate over novel conceptual frameworks attuned to investigate contemporary manifestations of youth religiosity, for example in digital spaces. The methodological chapters advocate for reflexivity in the context of empirical research on religion in migration society and promote a self-evaluative assessment of researchers' positionalities.

Die Diskussion um die Vollverhüllung muslimischer Frauen ist hoch emotional. Ob Gesichtsverhüllungen wie Nikab und Burka, aber auch Vermummung ohne religiös-kulturellen Bezug verboten werden sollen, entscheidet die Schweizer Stimmbevölkerung im Frühjahr 2021. Der Islamwissenschaftler Andreas Tunger-Zanetti ist mit Studierenden den Widersprüchen der sogenannten Burka-Debatte nachgegangen. Die entstandene Studie bietet zunächst neben einer kulturhistorischen Herleitung die erste solide Schätzung zur Anzahl vollverhüllter Frauen in der Schweiz, persönliche Aussagen einer Schweizer Nikabträgerin über ihre Beweggründe und Erfahrungen sowie einen Vergleich mit der Forschung anderer westeuropäischer Länder und skizziert die politischen Vorstösse der letzten Jahre. Im zweiten Teil arbeitet das Team anhand typischer Beiträge in Presse und Fernsehen heraus, was hinter der Debatte steckt.
