This volume contains 18 papers at the Algebraic Geometry Conference, Yaroslavl', August 10-14, 1992. These conferences in algebraic geometry have a great tradition in Russia and are helt since 1979 in Yaroslavl' every second year. The present conference, the eighth one, was the first in which several foreign mathematicians participated. From the Russian side, there was a large group of specialists in algebraic geometry and related fields (invariant theory, topology of manifolds, theory of categories, mathematical physics etc.). Lectures on modern directions in algebraic geometry, such as the theory of exceptional bundles and helices on algebraic varieties, moduli of vector bundles on algebraic surfaces with applications to Donaldson's theory, geometry of Hilbert schemes of points, twistor spaces and applications to string theory, and more traditional areas, such as birational geometry of manifolds, adjunction theory, Hodge theory, problems of rationality in the invariant theory, topology of complex algebraic varieties, and others are contained in this volume.
This book is written by a well-known expert in classical algebraic geometry. Tyurin's research was specifically in explicit computations to vector bundles on algebraic varieties. This is the only available monograph written from his unique viewpoint. Ordinary (abelian) theta functions describe properties of moduli spaces of one-dimensional vector bundles on algebraic curves. Non-abelian theta functions, which are the main topic of this book, play a similar role in the study of higher-dimensional vector bundles. The book presents various aspects of the theory of non-abelian theta functions and the moduli spaces of vector bundles, including their applications to problems of quantization and to classical and quantum conformal field theories. The book is an important source of information for specialists in algebraic geometry and its applications to mathematical aspects of quantum field theory.
This is the first volume of a three volume collection of Andrey Nikolaevich Tyurin's Selected Works. It includes his most interesting articles in the field of classical algebraic geometry, written during his whole career from the 1960s. Most of these papers treat different problems of the theory of vector bundles on curves and higher dimensional algebraic varieties, a theory which is central to algebraic geometry and most of its applications.

The main goal of the CIME Summer School on "Algebraic Cycles and Hodge Theory" has been to gather the most active mathematicians in this area to make the point on the present state of the art. Thus the papers included in the proceedings are surveys and notes on the most important topics of this area of research. They include infinitesimal methods in Hodge theory; algebraic cycles and algebraic aspects of cohomology and k-theory, transcendental methods in the study of algebraic cycles.
