This book looks at a cohort of poets who studied at University College Cork during the 1970s and early 1980s. Based on extensive interviews and archival work, the book examines the notion that the poets form a “generation” in sociological terms. It proposes an analysis of the work of the poets, studying the thematics and preoccupations that shape their oeuvre. Among the poets that figure in the book are Greg Delanty, Theo Dorgan, Seán Dunne, Gerry Murphy, Thomas McCarthy, Gregory O’Donoghue, and Maurice Riordan. The Finno-Ugric Republics and the Russian State
First Published in 2000. This text provides a survey of the peoples who speak Finno-Ugric languages and have titular republics or autonomous regions within the post-Soviet Russian federation. Their languages have set them apart from their Turkic and Russian neighbours and helped to preserve their distinct identity, including their animist religious practices. Previous works on this subject were written before the demise of the USSR so that information on the subject was screened by Soviet censors. In particular, this book explores the principal threats now facing these peoples - as much environmental as political. Although communism has gone, the exploitation of natural resources threatens the region's ecology, while the new rulers in the Kremlin seem set to continue their predecessors' oppressive policies towards the Finno-Ugrians. The book is written with commitment to the threatened human and political rights of these endangered peoples.

This book outlines an innovative approach to the study of literature called pragmapoetics, a philosophy of poetic utterances. The book posits that studies are as much a branch of linguistics as they are of the philosophy of language and mind, and considers the poetic self-referential function a profound feature of life and intentionality. As a structuralist thinker, the author is drawn towards graphical definitions for their greater elucidative power.
