The Business of Development in Post-Colonial Africa
This collection brings together a range of case studies by both established and early career scholars to consider the nexus between business and development in post-colonial Africa. A number of contributors examine the involvement of European companies (most notably those of former colonial powers) in development in various African states at the end of empire and in the early post-colonial era. They explore how businesses were not just challenged by the new international landscape but benefited from the opportunities it offered, particularly those provided by development aid. Other contributors focus on the development agencies of the departing colonial powers to consider how far these served to promote the interests of European companies. Together these case studies constitute an important contribution to our understanding of both business and development in post-colonial Africa, redressing an imbalance in existing histories of both business and development which focus predominantly on the colonial period. Hayward's New England Gazetteer contains descriptions of nearly 10,000 places-counties, towns, villages, rivers, bays, streams, islands, and so forth-scattered among this six-state region. The descriptions are full or spare, by design. However, at a minimum, the descriptions include, in the case of communities, the date of the locality's founding or incorporation, precise location, population and principal industry in 1837, and something about the history; or, with respect to bodies of water, they include its source and terminus, the region traversed by it, uses to which settlers have put it, and sometimes a historical anecdote that occurred there.
Imagining Britain’s Economic Future, c.1800–1975
Following the Brexit vote, this book offers a timely historical assessment of the different ways that Britain’s economic future has been imagined and how British ideas have influenced global debates about market relationships over the past two centuries. The 2016 EU referendum hinged to a substantial degree on how competing visions of the UK should engage with foreign markets, which in turn were shaped by competing understandings of Britain’s economic past. This edited collection draws together new historical writing on the Commonwealth.
