The 1990’s was designated as ‘the decade of the brain’ and now, common mental disorders are described as ‘brain disorders’. Yet intense research interest on the brain has largely side-lined the body as a passive observer, disconnecting mental from physical health and contributing to further societal stigma on the nature of psychiatric illness and mental distress. The biopsychosocial pathway to premature mortality or longevity is a complex one, involving a host of closely intertwined mechanisms and moderating factors, some of which are investigated in this special issue. All the articles published here provide new insights into the pathways linking emotion, physical health and longevity, highlighting the tight linkage between mind, brain and body.
This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th European Performance Engineering Workshop, EPEW 2009, held in London, UK during July 9-10, 2009. The 13 full papers and 4 short papers presented in this volume, together with the abstract of one invited paper, were carefully reviewed and selected from 33 submissions. The papers deal with modeling of auctions and markets, hardware modeling of RAID systems, performance aspects of cellular and fixed-line networks, mean value analysis, stochastic ordering to queuing networks, extension of passage-time analysis, stochastic process algebra (PEPA), tagged customers in generalised stochastic Petri nets, and representation and analysis of generally-distributed stochastic systems.
Today, computer science engineering and telecommunications are two important areas linked and even inseparable. This is obvious for the user who connects the modem of his computer on his mobile phone or telephone line to access, via the global data network, the information available on the servers. The both domains are evolving rapidly and the development of new architectures of systems dedicated to telecommunications and computing becomes essential. Especially, wireless transmission systems with high data rate. Two parts of these systems should be developed software and hardware. Another area that is renewable energies becomes more attractive for researchers in order to develop new conversion systems with good performances, and a good optimization of energy. For example, in wireless sensor systems, we try to develop new protocols permitting to have a good autonomy in terms of energy.
In the era of COVID-19, many people have suffered high levels of stress and mental health problems. To cope with the widespread of suffering (physical, psychological, social, and economical) the positive psychology of personal happiness is no longer the sole approach to examine personal wellbeing. Other approaches such as Viktor Frankl’s theory of self-transcendence provide a promising framework for research and intervention on how to achieve resilience, wellbeing, and happiness through overcoming suffering and self-transcendence.
