An Emptyful Chair: Journeying into God's Mystical Presence is the story of a man who experienced a Christian beginning of life, subsequent darkness of failure and despair, and the gradual gift of return to life in the Divine Presence. As the story unfolds, the author shares the totality of his life-his upbringing and schooling, pastoral ministries, rejection by conservatives, popularity as a university professor, along with a life common to many who have experienced self-disappointment, rejection, tragedy, and failure. An Emptyful Chair reveals how spiritual mentors such as Richard Rohr and Carl Jung, contemplatives like Phyllis Tickle and Basil Pennington, and mystics akin to Meister Eckhar...

Why Animal Experimentation Matters

Animal experimentation has made a crucial contribution to many of the most important advances in modern medicine. The development of vaccines for deadly viruses like rabies and yellow fever depended upon animal research, and much of our basic knowledge about human health and physiology was discovered through the use of animals as well. Inspite of these gains, animal rights activists have been zealous in communicating to the public and policymakers their view that the use of animals in medical research is morally wrong and should be severely curtailed or eliminated. The activists' arguments draw upon a range of disciplines and focus on both practical and ethical aspects of animal experimentat...

During the armistice proceedings and at the Peace Conference after World War I, French General Maxime Weygand served as chief aid to Marshal Foch. Called out of retirement in the late 1930s, Weygand again served his country during World War II, becoming commander in chief of the French Army. His call for enhanced French unity, military preparedness, and adaptation to a new kind of war dominated by tank mobility might have saved France the humiliating defeat in 1940 at the hand of the Nazis, had it been heeded. Weygand's recognition of the Nazi threat earned him the respect of Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt. Weygand's Vichy Resistance led to his imprisonment from late 1942 through the end of the war. French archival sources, available oral testimony and Weygand's private papers contribute to a fascinating biography of one of World War II's unsung heroes.
