"I have a story to tell you. It is a tale of adventure, of love, and deception, of destiny and death. It is a tale of kings, and emperors, and of beautiful princesses; but also of poets, pirates, and priests. It is a story to entertain and instruct, to stir the blood, to inflame the senses, to dizzy the mind and rouse the soul..." Ismail the Storyteller tells tales of Abu Nuwas, the poet, libertine and spy known as The Father of Locks and his bitter rivalry with a Roman assassin; tales which gradually reveal a shocking betrayal, and culminate in a death which will shock the world. The sequel to The Father of Locks.

"Baghdad, the capital of the world, is a city crowded with stories, and founded on secrets, and some stories, can be deadly." "Ismail al-Rawiya is a thief who dreams of being a poet. He is drawn to Baghdad, and to the court of the Khalifah Harun al-Rashid. In the turbulent city, Ismail falls into the company of the poet Abu Nuwas, known as the Father of Locks. Abu Nuwas is a brilliant artist, but also a decadent drunkard with a taste for trouble." "The Father of Locks has his own secret: he is an irregular and reluctant agent of the scheming Wazir, Ja'Far al-Barmaki, who now assigns him to investigate reports that the Devil is stalking the streets of Baghdad. Together the poet and the thief uncover a hidden world, of forbidden cults, foreign spies, and a mysterious Brass Bottle." "The Father of Locks weaves together history and legend in a tale of murder and espionage in the spirit of The Thousand and One Nights." --Book Jacket.

Focusing on modern-day fiction set in the Middle Ages or that incorporates medieval elements, this study examines storytelling components and rhetorical tropes in more than 60 works in five languages by more than 40 authors. Medievalist fiction got its "postmodern" start with such authors as Calvino, Fuentes, Carpentier and Eco. Its momentum increased since the 1990s with writers whose work has received less critical attention, like Laura Esquivel, Tariq Ali, Matthew Pearl, Matilde Asensi, Ildefonso Falcones, Andrew Davison, Bernard Cornwell, Donnal Woolfolk Cross, Ariana Franklin, Nicole Griffith, Levi Grossman, Conn Iggulden, Edward Rutherfurd, Javier Sierra, Alan Moore and Brenda Vantrease. The author explores a wide range of "medievalizing" tropes, discusses the negative responses of postmodernism and posits four "hard problems" in medievalist fiction.

With the centenary of the outbreak of hostilities, the Great War continues to cast a shadow over the world. We can still feel the tremors from those terrible events: the personal crises and large-scale military operations that defined four years of conflict. This collection reflects these themes, presenting a kaleidoscopic view of the War's impact, on those left behind as well as those caught up in conflict. Heart-warming, thought-provoking and enigmatic, these are surprising stories of the ongoing presence of war in the lives of ordinary people.
