When you are new on the job and you dont know what you are doing and your boss is looking for a replacement before firing you and your morale is dismal, dont ever give up. Your boss may be fired in the morning. Your new boss may decide that you werent the problem. The jerk who wanted to fire you was the problem. So always do your best and never give up.
