The complexity of modern embedded systems has increased rapidly in the recent past. Introducing models of computation into the design flow has significantly raised the abstraction in system level design of embedded systems. Establishing such high abstraction levels in common hardware /software co-design flows is still in its infancy. H. Gregor Molter develops a hardware / software co-design flow based on the Discrete Event System Specification model of computation. He advocates that such a system level design flow should exploit a timed model of computation to allow a broad application field. The presented design flow will transform timed DEVS models to both synthesizable VHDL source code and embeddable C++ source code.
Embedded systems have been almost invisibly pervading our daily lives for several decades. They facilitate smooth operations in avionics, automotive electronics, or telecommunication. New problems arise by the increasing employment, interconnection, and communication of embedded systems in heterogeneous environments: How secure are these embedded systems against attacks or breakdowns? Therefore, how can embedded systems be designed to be more secure? How can embedded systems autonomically react to threats? Facing these questions, Sorin A. Huss is significantly involved in the exploration of design methodologies for secure embedded systems. This Festschrift is dedicated to him and his research on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
Thomas Feller sheds some light on trust anchor architectures for trustworthy reconfigurable systems. He is presenting novel concepts enhancing the security capabilities of reconfigurable hardware. Almost invisible to the user, many computer systems are embedded into everyday artifacts, such as cars, ATMs, and pacemakers. The significant growth of this market segment within the recent years enforced a rethinking with respect to the security properties and the trustworthiness of these systems. The trustworthiness of a system in general equates to the integrity of its system components. Hardware-based trust anchors provide measures to compare the system configuration to reference measurements. Reconfigurable architectures represent a special case in this regard, as in addition to the software implementation, the underlying hardware architecture may be exchanged, even during runtime.
People from outside of Brasília often dismiss Brazil’s capital as socially divided, boring, corrupt, and emotionally cold. Apparently its founders created not a vibrant capital, but a cultural wasteland. However, as Sophia Beal argues, Brasília’s contemporary artists are out to prove the skeptics wrong. These twenty-first-century artists are changing how people think about the city and animating its public spaces. They are recasting Brasília as a vibrant city of the arts in which cultural production affirms a creative right to the city. Various genres—prose, poetry, film, cultural journalism, music, photography, graffiti, street theater, and street dance—play a part. Brasília’s initial 1960s art was state-sanctioned, carried out mainly by privileged, white men. In contrast, the capital’s contemporary art is marked by its diversity, challenging norms about who has a voice within the Brasília art scene. This art demystifies the capital’s inequities and imagines alternative ways of inhabiting the city.
A multifaceted exploration of what makes a home 'Jewish', materially and emotionally, and of what it takes to make Jews feel 'at home' in their environment.
Alexander Biedermann presents a generic hardware-based virtualization approach, which may transform an array of any off-the-shelf embedded processors into a multi-processor system with high execution dynamism. Based on this approach, he highlights concepts for the design of energy aware systems, self-healing systems as well as parallelized systems. For the latter, the novel so-called Agile Processing scheme is introduced by the author, which enables a seamless transition between sequential and parallel execution schemes. The design of such virtualizable systems is further aided by introduction of a dedicated design framework, which integrates into existing, commercial workflows. As a result, this book provides comprehensive design flows for the design of embedded multi-processor systems-on-chip.
They were musicians, writers, painters, actors, scientists, mathematicians, architects, doctors, photographers, dancers, businessmen and even circus clowns, police officers and football coaches. All refugees from nazi fascism, who sought salvation from 1933 onwards. They are remembered in 300 illustrated biographies, representing the thousands of fugitives who made or remade their lives and careers in Brazil and contributed so much to Brazilian society. Each trajectory, an epic, from birth and training in the Old World, the terrible dangers and sufferings faced with the arrival of Nazism, the struggles and adventures to escape, obtain visas and embark towards freedom. The Dictionary of Refugees from Nazi fascism in Brazil reports all this. It is yet another publication by Casa Stefan Zweig, based in Petrópolis and dedicated to the dissemination and study of the work of the great Austrian writer who died here and the role of refugees who, like him, escaped from the totalitarianism.
