Morphology and Its Demarcations
The papers in this volume derive from the International Morphology Meeting (Vienna 2004) and were selected because they address the main topic of the conference: external and internal demarcations of morphology. The external demarcation between syntax and morphology is dealt with in the papers by Rood, Cysouw, Milicevic, Blom, Enrique-Arias, and Heine & König. Demarcations of inflection and derivation are discussed in the contributions by Ricca, Lloret, Manova, Say, aucer, and Stump. In contrast to theoretical discussions in previous literature, which have concentrated on the internal boundary between inflection and derivation, this volume attributes equal importance to the demarcations between derivation and compounding, addressed in the contributions by Bauer, Booij, tekauer, Fradin, Amiot, and Scalise, Bisetto & Guevara.
Sociolingüística y Pragmática Del Español
This book provides a clear and comprehensive overview of sociolinguistics and the pragmatics of oral communication in Spanish. It is a thoroughly updated revision of the first edition, which was published in 2001 and received critical acclaim. While maintaining the same structure as the first edition, the second edition will include revised Ejercicios de Reflexion along with new comprehension checks and new suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter; these revisions and additions will enhance its appeal as a classroom text. Among the significant substantive revisions are more attention to the relation of pragmatics to sociolinguistics, a new section on applied sociolinguistics and the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language, updated information on statistical modeling programs for studying linguistic variables, expanded coverage of the overt versus null pronomial subject variable, a new emphasis on pragmatics in chapter five, and a new section on Spanglish. The entire book will be updated in relation to scholarship published since 2001. Additional attention to the definition of key concepts and terms will be provided throughout the volume.
Continuity and Change in Grammar
One of the principal challenges of historical linguistics is to explain the "causes" of language change. Any such explanation, however, must also address the actuation problem: why is it that changes occurring in a given language at a certain time cannot be reliably predicted to recur in other languages, under apparently similar conditions? The sixteen contributions to the present volume each aim to elucidate various aspects of this problem, including: What processes can be identified as the drivers of change? How central are syntax-external (phonological, lexical or contact-based) factors in triggering syntactic change? And how can all of these factors be reconciled with the actuation problem? Exploring data from a wide range of languages from both a formal and a functional perspective, this book promises to be of interest to advanced students and researchers in historical linguistics, syntax and their intersection."
New Approaches to Old Problems
This volume contains revised versions of thirteen of the papers presented at the parasession, "New Solutions to Old Problems: Issues in Romance Historical Linguistics," held as part of the 29th Linguistic Symposium on the Romance Languages (1999). These studies examine specific problems in Romance historical linguistics within the framework of new analytical approaches, many of which represent extensions into the diachronic realm of methodologies and theories originally formulated to explain aspects of synchronic phonology and syntax. Insights afforded by Principles and Parameters, the Minimalist Program, Optimality Theory, grammaticalization theory, and sociohistorical linguistics are used to elucidate such long-standing issues in traditional historical grammar as diphthongization in Hispano-Romance, syncope of intertonic vowels in Hispano- and Gallo-Romane, Romance lenition, the role of analogy in morphological change, word order, infinitival constructions, and the collocation of clitic object pronouns in Old French and Old Spanish.

Crime and violence soared in twenty-first-century Venezuela even as poverty and inequality decreased, contradicting the conventional wisdom that these are the underlying causes of violence. These factors led to dramatic but unequal economic growth, massive institutional and social change, and dysfunctional criminal justice policies that destabilized illicit markets and social networks, leading to an increase in violent conflict resolution. Remote sensing of precipitation is pursued through a broad spectrum of continuously enriched and upgraded instrumentation, embracing sensors which can be ground-based (e.g., weather radars), satellite-borne (e.g., passive or active space-borne sensors), underwater (e.g., hydrophones), aerial, or ship-borne.
