The Press and Democratic Backsliding

The Press and Democratic Backsliding

This edited volume explores the democratic dangers posed by a political press that emphasizes electoral competition, strategy, entertainment, and what Jay Rosen calls “savviness”—praising candidates for being politically smart rather than being honest—in its coverage of a political landscape dominated by a looming authoritarian threat. Contributors document how the American and global political press have failed to fulfill their role in elections and demonstrate how authoritarians have used and will continue to use their power in setting policy before going on to suggest and develop solutions to these problems. These proposed solutions include the adoption of democracy-focused framing, solutions journalism, and solidarity journalism, all of which emphasize the needs and issues of democratic communities over candidates’ political strategy. The book’s recommendations contribute to a reorientation of journalism toward democracy and truth rather than performative detachment and forced balance. Scholars of journalism, mass media, communication, and political science will find this collection to be of particular use.

Explaining and Resisting Trumpism Post-2020

This edited volume sheds light on why, even though he lost the 2020 election, more than 74 million people—nearly half of the American population—voted for Donald Trump. In his four years, President Trump was a divisive figure. Authored by scholars and activists from an array of disciplinary areas and backgrounds, this book addresses why certain groups of voters found Trump appealing, how the Trump campaign utilized fear and conspiracy theories to woo voters, lessons Democrats should learn from the 2020 election, and the role activism had in the election and in the continuation or amelioration of Trumpism.

Rhetoric and Democracy in a Post-Truth Era

Rhetoric and Democracy in a Post-Truth Era offers a timely examination of public communication and political culture in the United States and the systemic feedback loops that have amplified democratic dysfunction and violence. Informed by both deductive and inductive analysis of four key perils (post-truth; polarization; [social media] platform; and populism) in the interplay of complex systems, Joshua J. Frye and Steven R. Goldzwig examine rhetorical traditions and trajectories to synoptically explain both how we got to this point and how we can fix it. Exploring salient and increasingly important issues affecting the public life and culture of American democracy and democracies worldwide, this work expands public understanding of the current political landscape, reveals what effective democratic citizenship requires, and identifies communication practices that can be used to better engage with these contemporary challenges. Scholars of communication, rhetoric, and political science will find this book of particular interest.

This is an open access book.According to Castells, power now rests in networks: “the logic of the network is more powerful than the powers of the network” (quoted in Weber, 2002, p. 104) – it is whether nation states or local communities are deeply affected, especially by inclusion in and exclusion from the global networks that structure a various sectors in society at any level. Thus it is also crucial look closely at exclusion from and inclusion in different kinds of social structures where connectivity and access to networks are essential, being aware that people at the bottom are those who, with nothing to offer the network, are excluded. Castells’ arguments shows us how the new ...

QAnon, Chaos, and the Cross

“What is truth?” said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer. —Francis Bacon Although Christians are followers of the Truth, many find themselves tempted by the alternate “truths” offered by conspiracy theories.
