Identity and identification
The present volume includes the Proceedings of The 14 th International ‘Culture and Power’ Conference, organized by the University of Castilla-La Mancha and held in Ciudad Real, Spain, between 22 and 24 March, 2010 under the auspices of The Iberian Association for Cultural Studies (IBACS). The collection incorporates a selection of the papers presented. The conference revolved around the topic of ‘identity’ and ‘identification’, which, in the contributions, is explored in various cultural products across a wide range of social and national contexts. Identity and identification processes are examined as interrelated with other social and cultural dimensions. Readings echo a multiplicity of theoretical approaches, the number of issues contemplated being representative of the relevance of identity and identification processes as crucial analytical perspectives for cultural studies today.
American Borders
American Borders: Inclusion and Exclusion in US Culture provides an overview of American culture produced in a range of contexts, from the founding of the nation to the age of globalization and neoliberalism, in order to understand the diverse literary landscapes of the United States from a twenty-first century perspective. The authors confront American exceptionalism, discourses on freedom and democracy, and US foundational narratives by reassessing the literary canon and exploring ethnic literature, culture, and film with a focus on identity and exclusion. Their contributions envision different manifestations of conviviality and estrangement and deconstruct neoliberal slogans, analyzing hospitable inclusion in relation to national history and ideologies. By looking at representations of foreignness and conditional belonging in literature and film from different ethnic traditions, the volume fleshes out a new border dialectic that conveys the heterogeneity of American boundaries beyond the opposition inside/outside.
Diaspora and Exile
The different contributions of this body of work attemp to demonstrate that the concept of diaspora (exile) has acquired a renewed currency among scholars by examining that to be in exile, at least in some way, is to live a disjoint life. Thus, to live in exileor diaspora implies to take up the difficult task of kee-ping one`s dignity and one ́s story, despite the on slaught of a colonial power. The relationship with a past, often through stories of the mother/land or through remembrance and (re)creation, becomes a means of survival. Futhermore, the sense (or absence) of community, and the positioning in language generate an ever more complex and dialogic definition of Canadian and American nationalities and identities.
Mobile Japanese Migrants to the Pacific West and East
This book explores “self-searching migrants,” a new group of indefinitely globally mobile people whose purpose of overseas stay is the search of true self and the work they really want to do, using Japanese trans-Pacific sojourners as the case study. Utilizing testimonies collected from interviews with Japanese migrants in their twenties to forties who had entered the job market between the early 1990s and 2010 and left for the English-speaking countries of Canada, Australia, and Singapore, the book argues that their practices are both ubiquitous and unique, the products of global and local contexts of a specific time. As semiskilled migrants from an extra-Western, postindustrial country, their struggles show a different picture of the West-centric world power system from those experienced by migrant workers from the Global South. Including extensive qualitative research and interview material collected over a 20-year period, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Japanese culture and society, cultural anthropology, and migration.
