Practical theology has outgrown its traditional pastoral paradigm. The articles in this handbook recognize that religion, spirituality, lived religion on this side and beyond institutional communities refer to realms of cultures, ritual practices, and symbolic orders whose boundaries are not clearly defined and whose contents are shifting. The Handbook of Practical Theology offers insightful transcultural conceptions of religion and religious affairs collected from various cultures and religions. The first section presents ‘concepts of religion’. Chapters include considerations of the conceptualizing of religion in the fields of 'anthropology', 'community', 'family', 'institution', 'law', 'media', and 'politics' among others. The second section is dedicated to case studies of ‘religious practices’ from the perspective of their actors. The third section presents the main theoretical discourses that map the globally significant diversity and multiplicity of religion. Altogether, fifty-eight authors from different parts of the world encourage a rethinking of religious practice in an expanded, transcultural, globalized, and postcolonial world.
Lena Böttcher offers an overdue exploration of the early years of the deaconess community in Neuendettelsau from a gender perspective. Drawing on rich archival material, she focuses on the process of a distinctive collective identity. Central to this study is the assumption, drawn from the social sciences, that collective identity is a social construction which requires the participation of the whole group through identification and which is consolidated by developing specific rituals, symbols, codes and normative texts, which facilitate integration, and by constructing external boundaries, which separate from the world and the wider church. This approach highlights the fact that the women were not merely passive recipients but participated and contributed to the formation of a distinct Neuendettelsau deaconess culture. Thus, this study offers an explanation for the popularity such institutes enjoyed amongst single and widowed Protestant women in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In consequence, this study significantly widens the scope of historical research on the Institute which so far has tended to take into account solely the male perspective of the Rektoren.
The First World War led to a fundamental reorganization of international relations. This had a profound impact on churches and mission agencies and their ecumenical networks. European Christianity was increasingly questioned. The shock was all the greater since the war alliances were formed without taking religious orientation into consideration. This volume examines the impact of the war on church and mission especially in Africa and Asia. The contributions provide a wide scope of historical analyses with a focus on the Hermannsburg Mission. The symposium was organized by the Ludwig-Harms-Kuratorium and the Fachhochschule für Interkulturelle Theologie Hermannsburg in 2018.

Non-Migration Amidst Zimbabwe’s Economic Meltdown addresses the complexities surrounding non-migration in Zimbabwe within the context of protracted political and economic uncertainty. Rose Jaji discusses how individual subjectivities mediate macroeconomic factors and critiques simplistic explanations of non-migration, paying particular attention the complexities and contradictions involved in the decision not to migrate. The book ends with a discussion of the synergistic relationship between non-migration and migration, demonstrating how one can morph into the other in response to evolving individual circumstances and macroeconomic factors.

"Moralische Geschichten" sind eine um 1780 aufgekommene Textsorte zur Bildung und Erziehung einfacher Leute, vornehmlich verfasst von Geistlichen, publiziert in Schulbüchern, Zeitungen, Kalendern und Katechismen. Sie erzählen von fortschrittlichen Bauern, treuen Dienstboten, folgsamen Kindern, sparsamen Hausfrauen und unerschrockenen Lebensrettern. Die Autorin erschließt das Textcorpus bibliographisch, stellt die weitgehend unbekannten Verfasser vor und kategorisiert Motive, Ideen und Programme dieser Texte. Die narrative Umsetzung von Aufklärungsideen in die Alltagspraxis führt unmittelbar in die zu gestaltende Lebenswelt der Zeit um 1800 ein. Hier wurde grundgelegt, was spätere Theoretiker gerne für Volkscharakter oder Stammeseigentümlichkeiten gehalten haben. Die Volkskunde vermag dadurch an die Wurzeln moderner Volksbildung vorzustoßen und ihre eigenen Beobachtungs-"Gegenstände" genauer zu historisieren.
