Missionary Calculus
As debates over globalization and multiculturalism intensify, missionary archives are increasingly being seen as important sources of relevant history. This book, based on extensive archival research, shows how Americans in the late nineteenth-century tried to transplant a type of religious institution, the Sunday school, from their homeland into British colonial India. How, in doing so, their methods conflicted with their aims is the subject of this book. The resulting institution was hybrid-Christian in intent, 'heathenized' in form, but, ultimately, universal in aspiration. Told as a story, this book holds appeal for anyone interested in religion, education, and transnational history.
Landscape, Religion, and the Supernatural
This book is the first study to tackle the relationship between landscape and religion in-depth. Author Matthias Egeler overviews previous theories of the relationship between landscape and religion and then pushes this theorizing further with a rich case study: the supernatural landscape of the Icelandic Westfjords. There, religion and the supernatural--from churches to elf hills--are ubiquitous in the landscape and, as Egeler shows, this example sheds entirely new light on core aspects of the relationship between landscape, religion, and the supernatural.
World of Worldly Gods
This anthropological study examines the changing relationship between Shamanic Bon and Buddhism through an ethnography of the Goleng village and its neighbours in Zhemgang district in central Bhutan. It is concerned with how Bon practices have persisted in villages despite the systematised opposition from Buddhist priests for over one thousand years, and in the last three centuries, from the Buddhist state itself. In investigating this issue, this book presents the ways in which Buddhists seek to control the Bon priests in the villages against the backdrop of local religious history and document the centrality of Bon beliefs in shaping people's everyday lives.
