Kegiatan berbicara adalah suatu peristiwa komunikatif yang mencakup penggunaan bahasa verbal dan non-verbal untuk menyampaikan makna. Seperti diungkapkan Chaney, berbicara adalah suatu proses membangun dan berbagi makna melalui penggunaan simbol verbal dan non-verbal, dalam berbagai konteks (Jondeya, 2011). Menurut definisi pendapat ini, kegiatan berbicara bertujuan untuk saling bertukar makna. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, semua orang harus menggunakan artikulator mereka untuk menghasilkan bahasa sehingga mereka dapat mengekspresikan setiap makna kepada orang lain. Selain itu, mereka juga menggunakan simbol non-linguistik seperti ekspresi wajah dan bahasa tubuh mereka untuk membuat maknanya menjadi lebih jelas.
