The Collective Spirit of Aging Across Cultures

The collective, inclusive, and intersectional framework used in this book speaks to the significance of understanding aging across diverse cultures from multiple perspectives, but still as a shared human experience. The underlying message of the book is that although we are unique and different in our aging processes, we are ultimately connected through this physical, mental and spiritual experience of aging. Thus, regardless of whether we are service providers, service recipients, educators or merely fellow human beings, it is important that we approach the aging experience through a collective lens for discovering and sharing resources as we age; honoring the past while simultaneously acce...

Oncology and Palliative Social Work

Oncology and Palliative Social Work: Psychosocial Care for People Coping with Cancer illustrates the need for integrating early palliative care for patients with cancer and the important role social workers have in providing psychosocial support services across the cancer trajectory. There is a convergence of oncology and palliative social work specialties in the delivery of comprehensive, culturally-congruent, whole person cancer care. OPSW reflects the collective knowledge, skills, clinical experience and perspectives of a diverse group of interprofessional contributors, including best practices, emerging trends, and priorities in psychosocial oncology, and the impact of the COVID-19 pande...

Their Fathers' Daughters

Social reformers of the early twentieth century drew attention to the tender age of many of the silk workers. Through the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, these female workers struggled to establish themselves, not as childlike victims, but as independent women, capable of finding their own way in the world and standing up for their own rights."--BOOK JACKET.

This book contains papers which discuss many different stimulus--response systems ranging from those in bacteria and paramecia to those in insects and mammals. Emphasis is placed on the identification and characterization of receptor molecules, physical properties of channel molecules, physical and chemical changes in receptors, channels and other structures after stimuli, and the molecular events in the sequential response, excitation, adaptation and learning phases. Use is made throughout of both traditional and new techniques in electrophysiology, biochemistry, genetics and ultrastructural analysis. By covering a wide range of stimulus--response systems the book invites comparison between systems and generates discussion about common principles underlying information reception, transduction and response.

The Oxford Textbook of Palliative Social Work

"It is so important to advocate for things that may not always seem possible. Getting to work with patients/families at the end of their life is the ultimate honor." - Lauren G Markham, MSW, LCSW, APHSW-C "In this work, one witnesses both depths of human suffering and heights of human transcendence that can inspire both awe and fear. At those times, I have found that surrendering my need to be "an expert" and instead, allow myself to simply be a "human" is the wisest action." - Kerry Irish, LCSW, OSW-C, FAOSW"--

Molecular basis of fruit development

Molecular basis of fruit development

The fruit is an important plant structure. Not only does it provide a suitable environment for seeds to develop and serve as a vehicle for seed disposal, but it is also an indispensable part of the human diet. Despite its agronomic and nutritional value and centuries of intensive genetic selection, little is known about the molecular mechanism of its development or the evolution of its diverse forms. The last few years have witnessed a surge of investigations on the early stages of fruit development propelled by the advancement of high throughput sequencing technology, genome sequencing of fruit bearing species, and detailed molecular insights based on studies of model organisms. This research topic is focused on early stage fruit development that ranges from pre-fertilization patterning of the female ovary through post-fertilization fruit initiation and growth. Provided by the renowned experts in the field, these papers are intended to highlight recent progress and shed light on different aspects of fruit development from structure, function, to molecular genetics, and evolution.
