Charles Conder

Charles Conder was one of the youngest, most original and most talented members of the Heidelberg School of impressionist painters, and one of the few to achieve a lasting reputation outside Australia. His work hangs in many major collections, including the Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Conder painted the Hawkesbury region and Sydney's beaches, including Coogee with Tom Roberts-who invited him to Melbourne. There he joined the artists' camps at Box Hill and Heidelberg, painted urban and bayside scenes and was a major instigator of the famous '9 x 5' Exhibition in 1889. As in Sydney, his carefr...

Burn

‘Dry heat and hot, dry winds worked upon a land already dry, to suck from it the last, least drop of moisture. Men who had lived their lives in the bush went their ways in the shadow of dread expectancy. But though they felt the imminence of danger they could not tell that it was to be far greater than they could imagine. They had not lived long enough.’ — Report of the Royal Commission into the bushfires of January 1939 With the start of every bushfire season and the first threatening hints of burning eucalypt in the air, we are reminded, no matter where we live, that bushfire is an inescapable reality in this country. In Burn Paul Collins tells the epic story of bushfire in Australia...

Garden of the East

Garden of the East opens the door to a time of change in Indonesia in the century before independence from Dutch colonial interests. It takes the journey from the beginnings of photography in the region in the 1850s, which were driven by colonial interests, to the rise of the self-made Indonesian man and the upheaval before liberation in 1945, painting a portrait of the former Dutch East Indies and its eventual end. The portrait is one of immense beauty and mixed sentiment, showing the splendour of the county's islands and people, its landscapes and rich ancient histories, burgeoning tourism and industry, and the changing relationships between the indigenous peoples and the colonial machine. The period is captured in the work of the earliest photographers travelling from Europe to the ascent of the region's own photographers, including those indigenous to Indonesia, and the growth of international interests in Indonesia as a destination, as an Eden of sorts, as the Garden of the East.

Molecular Biology and Immunology of Allergens explores the characteristics of natural allergens and allergens produced by recombinant DNA techniques. The book covers important inhalant allergens such as pollen, mites, molds, and pet dander, as well as insect venoms and Chironomid hemoglobin allergens. Biological functions of allergens; the structural definition of allergens by NMR, crystallography, and computer modeling; and the production of recombinant allergens are discussed. Special attention is given to the search for the most effective expression systems in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms and the purification of recombinant allergens as fusion and non-fusion proteins. Other topics addressed include the production of allergen-specific T cell clones, the discovery of T cell epitopes by stimulation with overlapping peptides, and methods to induce T cell anergy by tolerogenic allergen-derived peptides. Molecular Biology and Immunology of Allergens will be an excellent reference for all researchers and clinicians in allergology, immunology, molecular biology, allergen extracting, and immunotherapy.
