The present volume seeks to contribute some studies to the subfield of Empirical Translation Studies and thus aid in extending its reach within the field of translation studies and thus in making our discipline more rigorous and fostering a reproducible research culture. The Translation in Transition conference series, across its editions in Copenhagen (2013), Germersheim (2015) and Ghent (2017), has been a major meeting point for scholars working with these aims in mind, and the conference in Barcelona (2019) has continued this tradition of expanding the sub-field of empirical translation studies to other paradigms within translation studies. This book is a collection of selected papers presented at that fourth Translation in Transition conference, held at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona on 19–20 September 2019.
This book aims to help teachers and those who support them to re-imagine the work of teaching, learning and leading. In particular, it shows how transformations of educational practice depend on complementary transformations in classroom-school- and system-level organisational cultures, resourcing and politics. It argues that transforming education requires more than professional development to transform teachers; it also calls for fundamental changes in learning and leading practices, which in turn means reshaping organisations that support teachers and teaching – organisational cultures, the resources organisations provide and distribute, and the relationships that connect people with one another in organisations. The book is based on findings from new research being conducted by the authors – the research team for the (2010-2012) Australian Research Council-funded Discovery Project Leading and Learning: Developing Ecologies of Educational Practice.

European settlers came to the area now known as Walkertown as early as the 1750s. In 1769, Robert Walker was granted a license renewal for a tavern. From 1850 through the early 20th century, the local economy was dependent on farming, lumber manufacturing, grain milling, and merchandising. Tobacco manufacturing began early in the 19th century and became a thriving industry for the Sullivan, Booe, Poindexter, and Crews families. The Roanoke & Southern Railroad began serving Walkertown in 1889, and with it, the availability of larger markets spurred the growth of industry. The Leight Lumber Company was established near the depot around 1890 and prospered by making boxes for manufacturers and lumber for construction. The Walkertown Chair Company, begun in 1903, flourished until a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1940. The Walkertown Roller Mill, built by Robah Payne in 1900, has changed hands a few times and is now the oldest continuously operating business in Walkertown.
