In the ten articles featured in this volume, the contributors initiate a discussion on how and to what extent political changes, armed conflicts, economic, social and technological transformations that have taken place in Central and Eastern Europe over the decades have influenced the process of creating historical sources, their preservation and accessibility. Each author has attempted to document significant transformations, both past and present, in order to reveal their impact on records, management and archives. The partitions of Poland, political events, World War II and the war in Ukraine, digitalisation, the legal environment of the European Union, the development of information technologies, and the activities of community archives are just a few examples of the factors that influence how historical sources are created, archived, preserved or destroyed.
De-Centring Western Sexualities
De-Centring Western Sexualities critically assesses the current state of knowledge about sexualities outside the framings of 'The West', by focusing on gender and sexuality within the context of Central and Eastern Europe. Providing rich case studies drawn from a range of "post-communist" countries, this interdisciplinary volume brings together the latest research on the formation of sexualities in Central and Eastern Europe, alongside analyses of the sexual and national identity politics of the region. Engaged with current debates within queer studies surrounding temporality and knowledge production, and inspired by post-colonial critique, the book problematises the Western hegemony that often characterises sexuality studies, and presents local theoretical insights better attuned to their geo-temporal realities. As such, it offers a cultural and social re-evaluation of everyday life experiences, and will be of interest to sociologists, queer studies scholars, geographers and anthropologists.
Framing the Polish Family in the Past
This volume shows how families in different contexts – noble, urban, legal, religious - and across different periods of history from the late Middle Ages to the modern era, shaped the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and its successor states, pre-partitioned and post-partitioned Poland. The Guide aims to serve as an introduction to basic resources and concepts and to point researchers in the right direction. It cannot be as comprehensive as many of the excellent publications already available both in printed form and on the Internet and for this reason does not include detailed information on specific towns. The Guide has an emphasis on information, databases and resources which are accessible through the Internet.
After '89
After '89 takes as its subject the dynamic new range of performance practices that have been developed since the demise of communism in the flourishing theatrical landscape of Poland. After 1989, the theatre has retained its historical role as the crucial space for debating and interrogating cultural and political identities. Providing access to scholarship and criticism not readily accessible to an English-speaking readership, this study surveys the rebirth of the theatre as a site of public intervention and social criticism since the establishment of democracy and the proliferation of theatre makers that have flaunted cultural commonplaces and begged new questions of Polish culture. Lease argues that the most significant change in performance practice after 1989 has been from opposition to the state to a more pluralistic practice that engages with marginalized identities purposefully left out of the rhetoric of freedom and independence.
