This book provides, for the first time, a detailed, up-to-date, holistic approach to the pathology and biology of germ cell tumors. The main focus is the complex histopathology of these tumors, but special considerations are also given to their morphologic variations in relation to age, gender and organ. Critical updates are provided on terminology and classification; the discussion of biology and pathogenesis includes references to many molecular genetic and immunohistochemical findings from recent stem cell research. Individual chapters are devoted to germ cell tumors at different anatomic locations, including not only the ovaries and testes but also the mediastinum and central nervous system, and pediatric tumors. All of the contributing authors are opinion leaders from universities of excellence in Europe and the United States. This monograph will be of wide interest to practitioners and researchers in many fields of medicine, including pathology, gynecology, urology, and pediatrics, as well as stem cell scientists.

Neuroendocrine Neoplasia Management

This book provides the most recent update on the management of neuroendocrine neoplasia (NEN), a term covering all tumors of various organs and/or with a particular histology, including MEN (multiple endocrine neoplasia) related tumors, MiNEN (mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms), NEC (neuroendocrine carcinoma) and Merkel’s carcinoma. NENs are heterogeneous in their biology, clinical presentation and prognosis, showing a great variability in aggressiveness and therapy response. As a result, their treatment is based on a large spectrum of options. The standard therapies are surgery in early disease, various loco-regional procedures in certain conditions and mostly of a palliat...

This is the second edition of the only book to be devoted exclusively to the total cancer picture in adolescents and young adults (AYA), now expanded from the age range 15-29 to that of 15–39 years. For each of the diverse spectrum of cancers encountered in the AYA group, the epidemiology, natural progression, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options are described, with special emphasis on strategies for early detection and prevention. Comparison is made with management of both younger and older patients, and model programs are presented that address common diagnostic, staging, treatment, and psychosocial shortcomings in the AYA group. Detailed attention is also paid to principles and ...

This user-friendly book is a practical guide to the diagnosis of testicular tumors and rare tumors of the penis. It describes and illustrates pathology findings for each tumor type and provides information on clinical features, differential diagnosis, tumor staging, and prognostic factors. Since an effective dialogue between urologists and pathologists is essential for optimal patient care, due attention is paid to such aspects as the role of frozen section in the management of small testicular nodules and the accurate reporting of testicular and penile neoplasms to ensure that all knowledge required for diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making is available. The key information is presented in straightforward tables for ease of reference. This book, which includes more than 250 full-color photos, is not only a valuable resource for surgical pathologists and pathology residents but also an important reference tool for all clinicians who care for patients with genitourinary tract tumors.

MEDICON’23 and CMBEBIH’23

This book presents cutting-edge research and developments in the broad field of medical, biological engineering and computing. This is the first volume of the joint proceedings of the Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON) and the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering (CMBEBIH), which were held together on September 14-16, 2023, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Contributions report on advances in biomedical signal processing and bioimaging, medical physics, and pharmaceutical engineering. Further, they cover applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Pathophysiology, Epidemiology, Clinical Management and Public Health Response, Volume II (volume I.B)

Almost nine months since the first recorded case, the novel betacoronovirus; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has now passed 18 million confirmed cases. The multi-disciplinary work of researchers worldwide has provided a far deeper understanding of COVID-19 pathogenesis, clinical treatment and outcomes, lethality, disease-spread dynamics, period of infectivity, containment interventions, as well as providing a wealth of relevant epidemiological data. With 27 vaccines currently undergoing human trials, and countries worldwide continuing to battle case numbers, or prepare for resurgences, the need for efficient, high-quality pipelines for peer-reviewed research remains as crucial as ever.

Joining Efforts to Improve Data Quality and Harmonization Among European Population-Based Cancer Registries

Population-based cancer registries are an essential information source for quantifying the impact of cancer in a population and its evolution, planning and evaluation of cancer control policies and healthcare systems. In the last decades, the information provided by cancer registries has improved dramatically in quality and quantity. Technological advances and record linkage have contributed to data improvement. Therefore, clinical data collected by cancer registries such as stage, treatment, co-morbidity, etc. contribute to treatment effectiveness assessment and identification of inequality in health care access at the population level. The reliability and utility of the information provided by cancer registries depend on the quality of the data collected. On the other hand, cancer registries' data harmonisation is crucial for data use and comparability.
