The Routledge Companion to Contemporary European Theatre and Performance

This is a comprehensive overview of contemporary European theatre and performance as it enters the third decade of the twenty-first century. It combines critical discussions of key concepts, practitioners, and trends within theatre-making, both in particular countries and across borders, that are shaping European stage practice. With the geography, geopolitics, and cultural politics of Europe more unsettled than at any point in recent memory, this book’s combination of national and thematic coverage offers a balanced understanding of the continent’s theatre and performance cultures. Employing a range of methodologies and critical approaches across its three parts and ninety-four chapters...

The Art of Assembly

The Art of Assembly surveys theatre today to demonstrate its political potential in both form and content. Drawing on numerous examples from around the world in performance, visual art, and activist art, curator and author Florian Malzacher examines works that draw on the particular possibilities of theatre to navigate the space between representation and participation, at once playfully and with sincerity. In a time of wide-ranging crisis, The Art of Assembly is a plea for a strong definition of the political and for a theatre that is not content merely to reflect the world's ills, but instead acts to change them. A knowledgeable foray through the landscape of political theatre. die tagesze...

The exhibition The Promise of Total Automation at the Kunsthalle Wien (vienna, 2016) investigated our relationship to a world of machines, technological objects, and electronic devices. The prospect of a fully automated futurewhile acutely reshaping the notions of work, production, and value creationfeeds emancipatory scenarios that ultimately lead to the end of labor. Instead of offering a traditional record of the exhibition, the curators investigated books written on the subject and then reproduced their covers. The result is a fascinating bibliography and chronology of automation as seen across the twentieth century through the covers of books and their authors. Included artists are Atha...

Women in Eastern European Post-Socialist Countries

Women in Eastern European Post-Socialist Countries: Social, Scientific, and Political Lives explores the role of women in Central and Eastern Europe in bringing about social change, and the obstacles they face in fighting for equality in various areas of life such as science, politics, and reproductive rights. Against a backdrop of increasing re-traditionalisation of post-socialist societies, and the reinvigoration of patriarchal attitudes, the book presents a timely and important collection. Through chapters authored by academics with different specialities across the social sciences, the book addresses the fundamental areas in which women's determination is already initiating changes, namely politics and diplomacy, science, reproductive rights, and customs resulting from religion. Women in Eastern European Post-Socialist Countries is of interest to scholars of gender studies, political and social sciences, and contemporary central and eastern European history.

EMPTY STAGES, CROWDED FLATS. PERFORMATIVITY AS CURATORIAL STRATEGY.

During its impressive career over the last decades the term 'performative' has been attributed with many parallel meanings in the humanities, philosophy, arts, or economics. Empty Stages, Crowded Flats additionally applies the notion of the performative to the context of curating with the aim to unfold a potential that so far has been mostly unused. The book is following J. L. Austin, Judith Butler, and others in their belief in the performative capacity to transform reality with words and other cultural utterances, but it also emphasises the often dismissed, colloquial notion of the performative as something being 'theatre-like', believing that those two strands are in fact interdependent a...

Ivan Kožarić

Ivan Kožarić (born in 1921 in Petrinja, lives and works in Zagreb) completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the late 1940s. He has since become one of the most influential postwar avant-garde artists in what was once Yugoslavia. "Freedom is a Rare Bird" represents six decades of his complex artistic oeuvre and is the most comprehensive survey exhibition to date to be devoted to the sculptor outside of his native Croatia. "Haus der Kunst is privileged to present a landmark exhibition that represents the museum's interest to present robust examinations of some of the most significant, but little known artistic figures whose works have contributed to a broad reappraisal of important features in the history of contemporary art." (Okwui Enwezor) Kožarić has always kept the character of his works open. He reworks earlier pieces, reprocesses earlier ideas, and intentionally dates works inaccurately or incorrectly. To do justice to this openness, the exhibition is organized according to thematic connections within his work, rather than to chronology, style, or development.
