Life, Times and Work of William Gillies, 1898-1973
For seventy years, William Gillies has been seen as a placid painter of landscape and decorative still life. Andrew McPherson explodes this view to reveal a modernist whose response to the instabilities and violence of modernity touched universals of human experience. Gillies' idiom was shaped by institutions for artistic production unique to Scotland. But it was the politics of Scotland's connections to the rest of the British Isles that produced his mythic and misleading reputation.New paintings and new meanings are uncovered placing the micro-effects of modernity on mental health, family and community in the wider contexts of war, nationalism and public patronage. McPherson also shows how this changing world led Gillies towards new applications of modernist expression. Through these works, we can see the commitment of Scottish artists to the progress of art through their engagement and interpretation of the great movements of European modern art, from Fauvism and Expressionism, to Cubism, Art Deco, abstraction and Surrealism, among others. Looking at the most advanced work of high-profile artists such as William Gillies and Stanley Cursiter, and lesser-known talents, like Tom Pow and Edwin G. Lucas, A New Era takes its name from the group established in Edinburgh in 1939 to show surreal and abstract work by its members. An exhibition is to be held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh from 2 December 2017 to 10 June 2018.
Picasso on Paper
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is widely recognised as the greatest artist - and greatest printmaker - of the twentieth century. This catalogue, which accompanies a major exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, charts the full range of Picasso's graphic work, from a pastel drawing made in the late 1890s, when he was still a teenager, to a drawing made in 1971, when he was eighty-nine years old. It covers the full range of his printmaking activity, from etchings and engravings to colour linocuts and lithographs. The exhibition is based on the world -renowned Picasso collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (Graphische Sammlung), but includes many other works. Another World
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's collection of Dada and Surrealism is regarded as one of the best and most complete in the world: it features masterpieces by artists such as Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Paul Delvaux, Yves Tanguy, Alberto Giacometti and Marcel Duchamp. The collection is also rich in archival material, ranging from letters and manuscripts to artists' books featuring unique drawings and inscriptions. The collection is rich thanks to two major sources: Roland Penrose (1900-1984) and Gabrielle Keiller (1908-1995). A celebrated British artist, author and close confidant of Picasso, Penrose was also a collector, assembling one of the greatest collections of early twentieth-century cubist and surrealist art.
Joan Eardley
Joan Eardley's career lasted barely fifteen years: she died in 1963, aged just forty-two. During that time she concentrated on two very different themes: the extraordinarily candid paintings of children in the Townhead area of Glasgow; and paintings of the fishing village of Catterline, just south of Aberdeen, with its leaden skies and wild sea. These two contrasting strands are the focus of this book, which looks in detail at her working process
