Victory on Earth Or in Heaven

This work reconstructs the history of Mexico's forgotten "Religionero" rebellion of 1873-1877, an armed Catholic challenge to the government of Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada. An essentially grassroots movement--organized by indigenous, Afro-Mexican, and mestizo parishioners in Mexico's central-western Catholic heartland--the Religionero rebellion erupted in response to a series of anticlerical measures raised to constitutional status by the Lerdo government. These "Laws of Reform" decreed the full independence of Church and state, secularized marriage and burial practices, prohibited acts of public worship, and severely curtailed the Church's ability to own and administer property. A comprehensive reconstruction of the revolt and a critical reappraisal of its significance, this book places ordinary Catholics at the center of the story of Mexico's fragmented nineteenth-century secularization and Catholic revival.

Independent Mexico

In mid-nineteenth-century Mexico, garrisons, town councils, state legislatures, and an array of political actors, groups, and communities began aggressively petitioning the government at both local and national levels to address their grievances. Often viewed as a revolt or a coup d'état, these pronunciamientos were actually a complex form of insurrectionary action that relied first on the proclamation and circulation of a plan that listed the petitioners' demands and then on endorsement by copycat pronunciamientos that forced the authorities, be they national or regional, to the negotiating table. In Independent Mexico, Will Fowler provides a comprehensive overview of the pronunciamiento p...

Through Wolf's Eyes

I have written this book to give a greater understanding of how this history was formed and the relationship between history of old and today as we see culture expand. This is my story. It explains the principles of slavery, organized baseball, and Veterans of the military. There are some stories of individuals that have made and are making an impact on this great nation. This book was written to inform readers about Black History, in Warren County, McMinnville, Tennessee located in middle Tennessee. The very first chapter was written to inspire all that read it. Chapter two is to explain principles of slavery. There are names, dates, and information that can help give individuals closure in the history. The photos in this book are most important, so that you can have a name, a place, what a person or people look like. It took 17 years to get information, history, stories, photos, and research, to make this a very interesting book. When one opens this book Through Wolf's Eyes, they will see what I see. Great book for historians, no matter what flavor you are!
