Meditation

To encourage God’s people, we present this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster on Meditation. Meditation is essential for a healthy walk with Christ and growth in grace. Charles Spurgeon introduces this subject with a helpful overview of the importance, practice, and benefits of biblical meditation. Thomas Watson defines what it is. Thomas Manton is convinced meditation is a biblical duty, and he tells us why. What is the nature of meditation? Isaac Ambrose answers that and describes the time, place, and matter of that holy practice. William Bates beautifully instructs us in occasional meditation, focusing on God’s creation, and George Swinnock offers five descriptions of solemn and set ...

1 and 2 Timothy

Pastor John MacArthur will take you through the two short letters to Timothy, passage by passage, so that you can better understand Paul's instructions to church leaders and the cultural context that makes these letters so relevant today. Timothy was a close associate of Paul who was facing problems within the church that he was leading in Ephesus. In these personal letters, Paul gives practical pastoral instruction to his protégé, highlighting godliness and holy living to help Timothy fulfill his calling and effectively carry out his important tasks in the church. Paul's gentle encouragement in these letters challenges Timothy to persevere in his faith—a faith that might have been weake...

God’s Battle Plan for the Mind

During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind , pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and ...

The Second Epistle to Timothy

Handley C. G. Moule (1841-1920), evangelical Anglican bishop and academic, was one of the foremost New Testament scholars in the Church of England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author of more than sixty books and pamphlets, Moule followed in the English scholar-bishop tradition of Lightfoot and Westcott. The H. C. G. Moule Collection brings together volumes of commentary on the Pauline epistles. Moule was the first principal at Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge, as well as the Norrisian Professor of Divinity. His writings are informative, yet accessible, making them useful both to scholars and laity. The works included in this collection contain verse-by-verse exegesis on Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Moule also includes practical lessons for daily living, gleaned from the epistles. Each of his works provides notes, indexes, and appendices to make these studies even more valuable.
