Unter dem Eindruck der Schließung des Kreißsaales im Wyker Krankenhaus am 1.10.2015 entstand die Idee, die Situation der Hebammen auf den Nordfriesischen Inseln darzustellen. Die sechs in dem Buch vorgestellten Geburtshelferinnen arbeiten unter besonderen Bedingungen. Während die drei Hebammen auf Sylt schon zwei Jahre zuvor damit konfrontiert wurden, dass auf der Insel keine Geburten mehr betreut werden können, haben sich nun auch die Hebammen auf Amrum und Föhr dieser schwierigen Situation zu stellen, die den werdenden Müttern, den ungeborenen Kindern und den Familienangehörigen erhebliches Ungemach bereitet. Ein Berufsstand wird ins Abseits gedrängt: der der freiberuflichen Hebammen.
