Atlas of the Heart
A masterpiece. Hurst (The heart, 6th ed. McGraw--a primary selection in Brandon-Hill) has included contributions to his classic text and has brought in Anderson, Wilcox, and Becker to provide illustrations. Begins, briefly, with normal anatomy (20 p.), then follows the course charted in The heart: congenital and valvar heart disease, myocardial and coronary heart disease, lung and pulmonary, endocarditis, trauma, and surgery for arrhythmias. The work ends with attention to other conditions: hypertension, neoplasia, collagen vascular disease, athletes' heart, aging, obesity, and alcohol. Illustrations are largely gross anatomical photos in color (and of a quality we associate with the copublisher, Gower). Other illustrations are images by various modalities and good drawings (none of these are up to the artistry of Springer V's Comprehensive manuals of surgical specialities). Since the first pacemaker implantation in October 1958 by Senning and Elmqvist in Sweden, cardiac pacing for bradycardia has become a well-established therapy. The impressive growth of clinical experience and the rapid development of pacemaker devices have greatly contributed to this situation. The electrical therapy appears to be so easy that insertion of the lead and its connection to the pacemaker generator requires little effort, skill or insight. The Sinus Node
For the clinician the sinus node is more or less a hidden structure and only by indirect assessment he is able to say something about the function of this center of pacemaker activity. The morphologist, however, is able to describe the structural microscopic and even electronmicroscopic features of this structure. The only disadvantage is that, as soon as he is coming into the picture, the tissue is dead. The physiologist tries to investigate the electrophysiological behavior of the sinus node. Since there is not a human being willing to give his sinus node for research, he has to do his investigation on isolated preparations of animals. Though there are a lot of experts in the field of the sinus node they nearly never speak the same 'language'. Therefore, it was my dream to bring all those people - or at least some of them -together on a workshop. I had the feeling that it was important to organize such a meeting without an audience but only with 'experts'.
