Derrière le néologisme « ribozymes » se cache une famille de molécules fascinantes, des ribo-enzymes, pourtant relativement peu étudiées. Ces ARN doués d’activité catalytique sont retrouvés dans toutes les strates du vivant, des virus au génome humain. À la fin des années 1970, la découverte d’un ARN catalytique niché dans un intron, puis d’un autre impliqué dans la maturation des ARN de transfert, favorise la découverte de nouveaux ribozymes et le passage d’une vision strictement « protéocentrique », héritée du dogme de la biologie moléculaire, à une vision plutôt « nucléocentrique ». Des ribozymes de toutes sortes ont depuis été identifiés dans les génomes, où leurs fonctions restent encore souvent mystérieuses. Regards sur les ribozymes retrace la découverte de ces molécules et présente un tableau de leur diversité fonctionnelle, de leurs mécanismes catalytiques et de leur distribution au sein de l’arbre du vivant.
