ste estudo é um esforço de compreender o Brasil em dois sentidos. Primeiro, considerando a inércia histórica que faz com que o país não atinja a magnitude para ele esperada, do ponto de vista da sua estrutura econômica e social. Daí uma permanência que é herança colonial e que avança alcançando a república desde seu momento inicial. A outra dimensão eleitoral, vista sob a perspectiva das eleições presidenciais de 1989 até 2014, mostra que por trás desde pano de fundo da relativa inércia estrutural, o país ainda enfrenta problemas que vão desde a participação dos seus cidadãos, até uma conjuntura que expôs dois ciclos com dois respectivos campos políticos: o PSDB e o PT. Partidos com perfis socioespaciais distintos e crescente polarização. A inércia estrutural e os ciclos eleitorais que mostram territorialidades distintas, constituem a resultante desta análise.

The region of the São Francisco river valley in eastern Brazil encompasses two main components of the geologic framework of the South American continent: the São Francisco craton and its marginal orogenic belts. Cratons, as the oldest, differentiated and relatively stable pieces of the continental lithosphere, preserve a substantial part of the Earth's memory. Orogenic belts, on the other hand, record collisional processes that occurred during a limited time span. This volume brings together a selection of revised papers, originally presented at ICHoLS IX (Sao Paulo/Compinas). The papers in the first section deal with studies ranging from the Latin model in post-Renaissance grammars to new scientific propositions at the turn of the 19th century; the second part carries articles devoted to a variety of topics in 19th and 20th century linguistics; and in the third section are united the papers based on plenary presentations, ranging from ancient Greek reflections upon language to developments in Brazilian linguistics beginning with the implantation of structuralist work by Joaquim Mattosa Camara (1904-1970) in the 1960s. In the concluding contribution, a survey of advances in the history of the language sciences is offered.
