Texts and Contexts is concerned with the development of Pacific Islands history as a specialization in its own right. Specifically, this volume examines the foundational texts that pioneered and consolidated the new subdiscipline and served as the building blocks and stepping stone for further developments in the field. Tokelau
Tokelau: A Historical Ethnography is the outcome of more than two decades of intensive and wide-ranging research in and about the three tiny Polynesian atolls known as Tokelau. The book is both a comparative ethnographic study of the islands of Tokelau and a narrative record of their past. The ethnographic study is set in the years around 1970, and local narratives and records complement foreign documents to tell the separate and combined stories of the atolls traditional, contact, and colonial pasts. Throughout, the differences and interrelationships between the three places are highlighted.

Spirits in Culture, History and Mind
Spirits in Culture, History and Mind reintegrates spirits into comparative theories of religion, which have tended to focus on institutionalized forms of belief associated with gods. It brings an historical perspective to culturally patterned experiences with spirits, and examines spirits as a locus of tension between traditional and foreign values. Taking as a point of departure shifting local views of self, nine case studies drawn from Pacific societies analyze religious phenomena at the intersection of social, psychological and historical processes. The varied approaches taken in these case studies provide a richness of perspective, with each lens illuminating different aspects of spirit-related experience. All, however, bring a sense of historical process to bear on psychological and symbolic approaches to religion, shedding new light on the ways spirits relate to other cultural phenomena.

This comprehensive and authoritative book is about the last colonies, those remaining territories formally dependent on metropolitan powers.
