Bio-based Solutions for Sustainable Development of Agriculture, Volume II

The agricultural industry is primarily driven by the fast growth of the population and the subsequent need to supply sufficient food globally. It is estimated that the global population will expand from 8 billion to about 9 billion in 2050 and crop production needs to double in order to supply enough food for all people by 2050. Moreover, the climate change and the intensification of areas of infertile and unproductive soil create new and additional difficulties. It is urgent and of utter importance to find alternative practices to the traditional ones (based on the indiscriminate use of various synthetic chemicals, e.g. fertilizers and pesticides), which are mainly used nowadays, to overcome current and future agricultural challenges in a natural, more efficient and sustainable way. Recent regulations (EU 1009/2019 and Farm Bill in EU and USA, respectively) promote the adoption of biostimulants in agriculture and open the market for new and innovative solutions. This regulation is a major step forward that should encourage the scientific community, in strict interaction with the industry, in the continuous development of new bio-based solutions for modern agriculture.

Advances in Fruit-Growing Systems as a Key Factor of Successful Production

The fruit production industry has been facing many challenges recently. For example, climate change, the introduction of new fruit-bearing species into production, traits of novel-bred fruit cultivars, innovations in orchard systems, rootstock/scion interactions, effects of fruit-growing technology and growing systems on yield, growing systems on yield, the appearance of new pathogens and pests, as well as birds and mammals in orchards, organic production, fruit quality and compounds, regulatory framework, high labour input, etc. Farmers need to have more up-to-date information and answers regarding these challenges. Modern fruit production is based on an adequate fruit-growing system, supported by many elements that complete this production.

Integrated nutrients management: An approach for sustainable crop production and food security in changing climates

Soil health and fertility are continuously declining due to the removal of essential plant nutrients from the soils in the current changing climate scenario. Due to less soil organic carbon (SOC) and growing of high-yielding varieties and hybrids further increases deficiencies of both macro and micronutrients that had a negative impact on soil health, crop productivity, food security, and growers. Integrated nutrients management not only increases crop productivity and growers' income but also increases soil fertility, health, and sustainability in changing climates. Integrated nutrients management (INM) refers to the maintenance of soil fertility and improvement in crop productivity with the application of plant nutrients through the combined application of organic fertilizers (animal manures and plant residues), chemical fertilizers (urea, SSP, DAP, etc.) and bio-fertilizers (beneficial microbes).

Krishna and Mediation

  • Categories: Law

The Book Krishna and Mediation is a humble attempt by the author to go back into the history and look at the institution of mediation in India. The Book is not written as a legal treatise. It is written from the point of view of layman and to understand how meditation prevailed in India from ancient time to settle disputes and bring peace and harmony to the society. Though the institution of mediation could be traced back to Vedic period; and Treta Yuga, where it was invoked to avert war between Rama and Ravana, the focus however, has been made on Krishna doing mediation in Dwapar Yuga. The reason for doing so is that Krishna has been considered as Lord of the Universe; and when the Lord of ...

Applications and Innovations in Intelligent Systems XVI

Swallowing sound recognition is an important task in bioengineering that could be employed in systems for automated swallowing assessment and diagnosis of abnormally high rate of swallowing (aerophagia) [1], which is the primary mode of ingesting excessive amounts of air, and swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia) [2]-[5], that may lead to aspiration, choking, and even death. Dysphagia represents a major problem in rehabilitation of stroke and head injury patients. In current clinical practice videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is the gold standard for diagnosis of swallowing disorders. However, VFSS is a ti- consuming procedure performed only in a clinical setting. VFSS also results in some radiation exposure. Therefore, various non-invasive methods are proposed for swallowing assessment based on evaluation of swallowing signals, recorded by microphones and/or accelerometers and analyzed by digital signal processing techniques [2]-[5]. Swallowing sounds are caused by a bolus passing through pharynx. It is possible to use swallowing sounds to determine pharyngeal phase of the swallow and characteristics of the bolus [2].
