Education for International Understanding in China

Identifying the essential feature of education for international understanding advocated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the book explores how Chinese schools have implemented education for international understanding since the 1980s. Through vivid cases, the author introduces the practice of education for international understanding in Chinese primary and middle schools. Based on the questionnaire survey, she analyzes the international understanding competence of Chinese students and teachers. Furthermore, she discusses the current dilemma and proposes possible solutions for Chinese education for international understanding in the future. While providing a window into China's contemporary education for the international community, the book can also be used as a reference for educational policymakers, educational researchers and primary and secondary school teachers in other countries.

This report seeks to enhance understanding around Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and its implications for educational content, pedagogy and practice. It attempts to provide common perspectives and to clarify some of the contested aspects of GCE. The report features examples of good practices and existing approaches to GCE in different settings, while highlighting priority elements for the future agenda. The publication is the result of an extensive process of research, consultation, dialogue and information exchange with education experts, policy- makers, researchers, practitioners, representatives of youth, the civil society, media and other stakeholders from all over the world. It draws extensively on the foundational work of the two key UNESCO events: the Technical Consultation on Global Citizenship Education (Seoul, September 2013) and the first UNESCO Forum on Global Citizenship Education (Bangkok, December 2013).

In 1999 the UN instituted the Program of Action on a Culture of Peace, leading to the Declaration of the International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World 2001-2010. This represented a paradigm shift away from the prevailing conceptualization of peace as ‘the absence of war’ to one of ‘creating cultures of peace’, and indicated a significant opening for peace educators and the expansion of their mission and field in peace research and scholarship. This book seeks to address several questions about the emergence, present state, and future of the field of peace education, and to ground the definition of the discipline in its ori...
