Demonstrates, contrary to conventional wisdom, that European modernism developed not only in the great metropolitan centers, but also in provincial cities such as Jena. The conventional wisdom is that the cultural sea change that was European modernism arose in urban centers like Berlin, Paris, Munich, and Vienna. Meike G. Werner's book, now in English translation, is a study of modernism in the provinces. Taking the small provincial city of Jena as a paradigmatic case, it re-creates the very different social and intellectual framework in which modernist experimentation occurred beyond the metropolitan centers. Invented traditions, social and spatial "liminality," and new ideas of social and...
This collection of 16 papers collectively reassess the philosophical contribution of German thinker Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970), author of such works as The Logical Structure of the World and The Logical Syntax of Language. Having begun their discussions of Carnap at a meeting in his hometown of Jena, Germany, and international group of academics contributed essays examining Carnap's importance and continuing relevance in the field of logical empiricism. Individual contributions examine such topics as Carnap's treatment of semantics; his conception of explication; continuities and discontinuities in the works of Carnap, Frege, and Quine; a Carnapian reply to Kurt Godel; and Carnap on categorical concepts. An introductory essay explores the evolution of Carnap's thought within the context of his historical milieu in Jena. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

Today, forty years after Timothy Leary's suggestion that hippies read Hermann Hesse while "turning on," Hesse is once again receiving attention: faced with ubiquitous materialism, war, and ecological disaster, we discover that these problems have found universal expression in the works of this master storyteller. Hesse explores perennial themes, from the simple to the transcendental. Because he knows of the awkwardness of adolescence and the pressures exerted on us to conform, his books hold special appeal for young readers and are taught widely. Yet he is equally relevant for older readers, writing about the torment of a psyche in despair, or our fear of the unknown. All these experiences a...

Surrealism is a particularly complex international movement, embracing both the literary and the visual arts, while lacking any single visual or literary style, and this, together with its long existence, has served to generate a very substantial body of writings - poetry, novels, essays, theoretical writings, manifestoes and other documents - which might be considered as fundamental to any proper understanding of the movement. The Sources of Surrealism is a comprehensive sourcebook documenting the origins and development of Surrealism internationally through a collection of 234 original documents. The texts have been selected from across the whole range of Surrealist writing, as well as inc...
