- Monograph dedicated to one of Italy's most talented proponents of Rationalist architecture, Giuseppe Terragni (1904-1943), with a focus on his experience during WWII - Edited by Giuseppe Terragni's great-grandson, president of the Archivio Terragni Giuseppe Terragni, an influential proponent of modernism in Italian architecture and design in the 1920s and 1930s, translated the visual vocabulary of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe into what became known as the Rationalist School of Architecture. This monograph covers his later years (he died in 1943), with a focus on the war and his devastating experience as a soldier. It includes some notable projects from the 1930s like the Casa del Fascio in Como, and the designs for an unrealised final project for a cathedral that he did in the days before his death. The book is illustrated with historical photographs and includes letters Terragni wrote from the front.

L’opera di Giuseppe Terragni è stata oggetto in questi anni di interpretazioni che contribuiscono a decifrarne le logiche compositive e sintattiche interne ma non di esaurirne la complessità dell’approccio. Una traiettoria di ricerca fondamentale ma troppo presto abbandonata riguarda infatti quella che Enrico Mantero chiamava «l’anima della contestualizzazione», ovvero quell’appropriatezza rispetto a luoghi e usi che costituisce il più efficace principio di opposizione all’idea di omologazione della città che, anche in Italia, ha determinato le politiche urbane degli anni Venti e Trenta. Ripercorrere le vicende che hanno ispirato il Piano Regolatore di Como, il progetto per il risanamento del quartiere Cortesella, per la conservazione di Casa Vietti, per il Quartiere satellite di Rebbio e per la Casa del Fascio, le espressioni paradigmatiche di questa lungimirante visione, permette di riportare alla luce una declinazione tutt’altro che secondaria della poetica dell’architetto comasco, e uno dei temi che più chiaramente lo distingue sullo scenario delle coeve tendenze dell’avanguardia europea.
