Assimilation has been a contentious issues for most immigrant groups in the United States. The host society is assumed to lire immigrants and their descendants away from their ancestral heritage. Yet, in their quest for a "better" life, few immigrants intentionally forsake heir ethnic identity; most try to hold onto their culture by transplanting their traditional institutions and recreating new communities in America. Jews and Armenians are often perceived as peoples with similar tragic historical experiences. Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands for centuries, in the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. Thus far, academic approaches to these two "classical" diasporas have been quite different. Moreover, Armenian and Jewish questions posed during the 19th and 20th centuries have usually been treated separately. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” that took place in Hanover in February 2019, addressed this gap in research and was one of the first initiatives to deal directly with Jewish and Armenian historical experiences, between expulsion, exile and annihilation, in a comparative framework. The contributions in this volume take on multidisciplinary approaches relating to the conference’s central themes: diaspora, minority issues and genocide.

Based on exploratory research with students and graduates conducted in Armenia and its diaspora during summer 2018, Cairns and Sargsyan provide insight into some of the challenges involved in moving abroad, focusing on three different destinations: Russia, the United States and the European Union. Additionally, Student and Graduate Mobility in Armenia considers issues that have an impact on life chances for highly qualified young people who wish to remain in Armenia, including perceptions of corruption in the local labour market and hopes for the future following the Velvet Revolution of spring 2018. This research will be of interest to students and scholars of mobility, youth, employment and education.
The book aims to develop a clearer understanding of the influence of social dynamics on the educational opportunities of high school students of color in the urban setting of California’s Los Angeles area. Specifically, we examine how students’ backgrounds, high school experiences and own agency shape their college preparation processes and postsecondary aspirations. While some research has been done on high school students’ college-choice process, this book is unique in its broad and comparative approach. It examines the experiences of students across 10 schools, identifying broad themes that are illustrated through specific case studies. This approach allows readers to understand the broader issues that face students from underserved backgrounds as they pursue college, while illuminating how these issues uniquely manifest hemselves in individual school contexts.
This book concerns various modes of being transnational among a diasporic population—Armenians in Germany—by drawing parallels between the first and second generation migrants. It puts forth the questions as to whether or not, and which kind of transactional activity/ties/practices survive over generations, and to what extent transnational engagements influence self-identification and the sense of belonging. It also examines how various modes of transnationalism, in turn, impact the sense of belonging. The book fleshes out new perspectives and interpretations of transnationalism, by revealing specific aspects of border-spanning ties, and by showing that connections to the country of origin do not necessarily need to be sustained or intensive in order to survive. They can, instead, fluctuate depending on various factors but still have the “right” to be called transnational.
